I see some posters have mentioned Cory Boyd’s name when talking about our lack of a run game.
IMHO Cory Boyd is just the type of power RB this offense needs,
He is available and desperate to get back into the league.
From Boyds twitter
“@CFL_Headlines I wanna come back home Toronto Argos… Even if its as a backup… That’s how much I Love Toronto and my Family… BaGa”
Even if there were room in the kitty (and I have no idea how deep Bob’s Ticat pocket is), there can’t be much more room in the cap, given the number of players we have on the week-to-week injured list.
Which made roon for the addition of Fantuz, Peach(?), Webb, Burris, McCollough, S. Williams, Patrick, O’Neill(?), Wojt(?), Dile(?). (The question marks are on the linemen, as they typically don’t make quite as much as the “skill” players. But then, you included a couple of lower priced players yourself - Young, Mcelveen - so I left them in.)
Never mind. I just realized that these were all players we had last year. Tisdale’s name on the list confused me - forgot he came back for a bit last year. So only a few names on my list apply. The IR, on the other hand…
YES..it looke like we had money for Chris Williams as Austin had indicated that we were ready to pay him 180 k or so
and they wer also interested in CHICK as well .
I think this organization plays the fans for fools as I am not convinced they even pay to the the cap ?
how could they if they get rid of big contracts like Rey Williams and Mallet etc and nto replace them .
We also very little vets
our momey is spent on :
Burris aboiut 300 k
Fantuz about 180 l
amd then maybe fre agent signings mccolough, shomari , bulcke hage, dyakowski , patrick as well as knowlton ,. jamal and wojt
other than that ..most of the team are likely close to the league minimum or less than 100 k .
i am guessing we pay about 30 -40 % less in salary to the top teams and that is why we have very few impact players and vets
look at montreal for example
they pa alot to :
calvillo
whitaker
sj green
richardson
Arland Bruce
Chip Cox
John Bowman
Bourke
Flory
Emry
Byron Parker
Kuale
I am almsot certian that these guys are making top dollars . With the exception of CALVILLO at about 300 k the rest are making about 150k each
They aren't allowed to pay 30% less than other teams, as there's also a minimum cap of $4 million defined in the CFLPA CBA. That's slightly less than 10% below the maximum cap, which I think is around $4.5 million. It's possible that they're near the bottom of the narrow range of allowable salaries, but it can't be that low.
Kent Austin should have #22 on speed dial. He's getting blackballed. If we had back's with decent hats could have won against the argos and could have scored in Sask and it would have changed the momentum of the game.
Fans give your head a shake there will be no Boyd , no AVon because Austin doesn't care to run the ball , and there is no ner money in the KItty for a 150,000 RB how much was KNowlton getting ?
Blocking is a teachable skill. Maybe now, since he has had no offers he would be a willing student. Still doesn't fix his bad locker room vibe tho. Then again being ignored might have humbled him a bit.
I don't question the run because we don't have one but that's not the fault of Walker, Gable, Delahunt or Diedrick it's bec ause Kent Austin is a passing coach and relies more on the passing game than on the rushing. If we start our drives by opening up the line for Walker or Gable you will see good average rushing yards per game and balance that with your passing game. Even when Burris throws the swing pass to Walker it's consistent. What we need are receivers a couple of good speedy wide outs to offset the other players and the guys injured like Fantuz, Stala, Jones, Gant and so on.
This may be a reality now. knowlton just being released has certainly opened up space for another top line player.
Austin is a strong no non sense coach so I can see the locker room issue not being a problem. Boyd still in his prime and was well on his way to a 3rd straght 1000 yard season and only the WC offense is the reason he was released. Boyd wioth walker as a change up back a perfect 1-2 punch.
As for his blocking I don't think it was an issue for a regular traditional offensive scheme just the West Coast scheme. Lets see what happens
This team has decided that the back should be a blocking back first, running back second. Therefore, Boyd wouldn't be a good it here. They'd rather have a guy who can pick up the blitz than a guy who can get 100 yards rushing the ball.
Austin's offense dictates that the RB can pick up the blitz, be a real part of the passing game and then run for the tough yards with a double TE set in order to salt away a victory. In that order.
