Cortez in line as Bombers HC

REPORT: CORTEZ TO GET SECOND INTERVIEW FOR BOMBERS' POST

It appears George Cortez is still in the running to become the next head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

According to TSN Radio 1290 host Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press, the Saskatchewan Roughriders' offensive coordinator is scheduled for a second interview for the position.

Earlier reports had Roughriders' quarterbacks coach Khari Jones listed as the favourite to get the job.

The Blue Bombers also reportedly asked for pemission to speak with Toronto Argonauts special teams co-ordinator Mike O'Shea.

Last season, Cortez was the head coach and director of football operations for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Hope he gets the job when he was our coach many time he looked lost on alot of calls

“Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

After Winnipeg watched Hamilton’s defense implode in 2012, they are looking to hire the architect of that failure. And here I was thinking that Kyle Walters was a smart man.

Well, if that’s what they want, they already have the creator of that bad defense on their staff.

I always felt we did not give a full chance with only 1 shortened season as a HC ( I say shorten due to the late signing after his coaching stint in the nfl). We obviously upgraded with Austin, but we likely can all agree he has a great offensive mind. I bet we are still paying him still.

Is he playing QB ?

Well, that's good news for the rest of the West division, Riders lose a solid OC and Winnipeg gets a bad HC, and if they keep Creehan, it will be the same combo that lead the Ti-Cats to last in the division last year.

Agreed completely. Under Cortez that Tiger-Cats had a superb offense and special teams.

The defense, on the other hand, was absolutely atrocious, and should have been easily correctable.

All in just in year as an HC.

I'd like to see him in an HC position again.

Too bad a top rated offense or special teams won't win you championships :frowning:

Isnt the 2013-Present Winnipeg Blue Bombers Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach Casey Creehan? Doesn't that spell another 6-12 record for the bummers next year, providing cortez and creehan run the show? :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, this is my 2000th post, someone get me a hero cookie! 8)

I would be surprised if Cortez gets the job.

Wade Miller wants some say on football operations. It's why Khari Jones is/was rumoured to be a head coaching option and will likely be on the staff in some capacity either way. Rick Worman, another Wade Miller guy, is also expected to be with the organization in some position.

Then you have the general manger, Kyle Walters, and two assistant GMs.

Then you're going to hire George Cortez, who wants more control than most head coaches? I don't see that happening.

I feel bad for Winnipeg fans if it does happen, because Cortez was terrible here and will get roasted in the West.

If Chapdelaine is still free, I'd give him a shot. He's been in a first-rate organization, learning at the feet of Wally Buono. He's also still a relatively young man and I think he and the team could have a long run together.

An Argo-Cat fan

That's a good thought, Barney.

Jacques C could be a good choice.

I was not a Cortez fan in Hamilton. I didn't care for his leadership. I think he's clearly a very good OC, but I don't think he's HC material. Leadership skill matters a lot in a HC. Remember, when he came to Hamilton he had a sum total of zero days as a HC in 35 years of coaching from high school on up. I thought it was a mistake to give him total control at the time. Maybe he's learned something from the experience with the Ticats.

I think that Khari Jones needs time as an OC before becoming HC. It's a big jump from where he is now to being the head man.

Isnt the 2013-Present Winnipeg Blue Bombers Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach Casey Creehan? Doesn't that spell another 6-12 record for the bummers next year, providing cortez and creehan run the show? :stuck_out_tongue:

6-12????? After going a sparkling 3-15 last season, wouldn't that be an 100% improvement???? :stuck_out_tongue:

According to Drew, Tim Burke and Casey Creehan may end up with the Blue team. Could the stars align any better for us? :rockin:

I wouldn't be so quick to crow. Burke would end up as DC in Toronto, with Creehan relegated to a position coach role. World of difference between Burke and Creehan as DCs. Burke has two Grey Cup rings on his resume. In four consecutive Grey Cups (2008 through 2011), one of the teams in the final featured a Tim Burke defense. The man may not be HC material, but he's proven himself as a fine defensive mind.

O do I hope the Hoggers end up with Creehan.

I wonder why Marcel Bellefuille isn't in the mix for this H/C job.
Was he let go with Burke?

'Tis a shame that the Bombers are moving to the West next season...
