"Community Ownership" really sucks

I was just thinking the other day about the Blue Bombers 20 year Grey Cup drought.

Now, in a 30 team league, this wouldn't be a big deal. Same with a 20 team league.

But the fact that this sports franchise has failed to get the job done since November of the year 1990 is mind-boggling. It's riduclous; absurd; atrocious.

Now I know there are some big Blue Bomber fans who don't care. There are others too that pretend they don't care. For some fans, the Bombers could go another 20 years without a Grey Cup Championship and not care. Just the fact that sometimes we get close is "good enough" for them. (Man, you can imagine Yankee or Red Sox or L.A. Laker fans doing the same?!... and those teams play in leagues with 30+ teams!)

You can blame whoever you want for the Bombers lack of success in the last 2 decades (both on and off the field). But the only thing that has remained CONSTANT over those 20 years is our current ownership group. Does anyone even KNOW who owns & runs the Blue Bombers? Is it a group of 10 bitter, cranky old men sitting in a room that begin each sentence with "Y'know, back in my day..." ? Because that wouldn't surprise me.

Right now, the Blue Bombers lose tons of money almost every year. Play in a football "stadium" that should've been condemned years ago. And can't win a Grey Cup in the 21st century- in an 8 team league.

Why any SANE individual would be against David Asper as new, private owner of this franchise is beyond me.

"Community ownership" isn't building us a new stadium... David Asper is!

I don't even know much about Asper, but this football franchise is in desperate, desperate need of a NEW owner with NEW ideas.

"Community Ownership" has become a joke. And I doubt even the die-hard Blue Bomber fans can come up with 1 good thing about it.

Winnipeg deserves better. The Blue Bombers deserve better. The sports fans of Manitoba deserve better.

Have you been under a rock for the past 2 years ?

^Have YOU been living under one the past 20?

So what's the point ?

The transition has been underway for 2 years, and you just decided to voice an opinion now ?

Good for you, I think I will delete your topic, because I feel like it.

I think I will delete your topic, because I feel like it.
No! Wait, please! ... I'm sorry.

Last chance, what is the point ?

Just to remind folks that it's been 20 years ?

Or that you think it won't be another 20 under private ownership ?

wow all the really supportive positive people come out b4 the season starts heh.. geesh.. whats an owner got to do with a team winning? i got an idea, daniel snyder can buy the bombers and spend like 1000 million a year on players and that should make us a contender right away, oh wait shoot cant do that, he's already been doing that in washington and they finished 4-12 last year.

our problem like it or not, has been 2 things.. 1. we havent really had a decent qb in quite a few years and thats 1 because we keep chaning coaches and 2. once the backup struggles for 1 game the fans demand changes. see kelly did it last year. he started lefors one game, boo'd off the field, he put in randall cuz the fans wanted that, boo'd off the field, he put in williams cuz the fans wanted that.. boo'd off the field, all in 1 game.

theres other reasons but... to say its got something to do with ownership is just ridiculous.

Don't see what community ownership has to do with the condition of Canad Inns Stadium. The stadium is owned by the City and they've neglected it for years.

C'mon back troll, I want to hear you beg some more.

On second thought, don't bother.

Don't see what community ownership has to do with the condition of Canad Inns Stadium. The stadium is owned by the City and they've neglected it for years.
And how hard did our "community ownership" push for a NEW stadium in the last 15 years? They didn't seem to care. David Asper had to come in and more or less do everything himself.

The Blue Bombers current ownership kind of reminds me of Winnipeg Enterprises (WEC).

And the Als play in College stadium of 20,000.00.

Again, what's really your point here ?

The two most financially successful teams, Edmonton and Sask, are community owned. The two most financially at risk teams, Toronto and Hamilton, are privately owned.

... and?

The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and L.A. Lakers are all privately owned. It’s irrelevant.

Edmonton wins Grey Cups, and has a pretty nice facility. Hamilton won’t be “at risk” once they build their new stadium.

You really haven’t “put me in my place” with your rant…

Have you or Pigseye even read my original post? What’s so great about “community owned”?! Can you tell me 1 thing? Or at least tell me why you’re not dead-set and desperate for a new Blue Bomber owner. Now- not in 3+ years.

umm what our "community ownership" had done for the last 15 years was look for private people who were willing to build a new stadium, i dont know if you remember but there was a toilet bowl stadium proposed for the perimeter hwy about 10 years ago, this u of m stadium thing didnt just happen over night, it wasnt some last second thing, they had been working on that with asper for quite some time.

seriously, just whining for the sake of it here. u got this guy whining about the stadium, u got another guy whining about the arena, seriously.. why bother? whats the point?

Unbelievable!! NONE of you seem to "get it".

I'll come right out and ask again:

What's so great about "community ownership" and the Blue Bombers current ownership group? Can anyone name ONE good thing? Why don't Blue Bomber fans hate our ownership group? Constant "rebuilding years". No Grey Cups. Crumbling stadium. A game-day experience that's surpassed by the minor-league Winnipeg Goldeyes. Etc.

And If It wasn't for David Asper, we'd be playing at Canad Inns Stadium until the place collapsed- which honestly looks to be any day now. We don't have our "community ownership" to thank for, well, anything...

I guess it's a "Winnipeg thing". Be satisfied with mediocricy and scared of change.

.. wow.. seriously. how bout u break openn your piggy bank and buy the team then. seriously.

the stadiums being done, its being constructed as we speak.. the really winnipeg attitude here is yours.. its called..

whining for the sake of whining.

sask is community owned, pretty succesful, same with edmonton, again pretty succesful, green bay, succesful.. so what makes u think having a private owner would make 2 craps a difference. SERIOUSLY man.

Ah geez…I’ll bite:
The current ownership structure has never been bankrupt needing bailout by the leagure like every privately owned team in the CFL at one time or another
The team has never folded
It has signed and nurtured some of the greatest CFL players in history
The team has been a consistent continual presence in your city
It is the highest level of professional sport in your city
Generally have been a more than competitive team
I had fun watching games there.

I think the group has done well. tough job. Hundreds of volunteer hours. Maybe you should apply.

good enough for me.

If the Bombers weren't community owned we probably wouldn't have a team. Governments aren't real big on bailing out privately owned sports team or building stadiums for them either.

Governments aren't big on bailing out "community owned" sports franchises either. How much begging did the Bombers have to do to stay afloat in the late 90s?

My point is, “community ownership”, in the Blue Bombers case, SUCKS. Period.

I can’t wait until we’re playing in a NEW stadium, with a NEW owner. We won’t necessarily win Grey Cups every year, but I pretty much guarantee you it won’t be nearly as bad as the Blue have been the last 20 years. I can prove it right now with this statement/question: … how can things get any worse?

hey jetsin07 i know your disapointed thats the jets won't be back this year so you came here to bash our team, for no apparent reason, none of us ever said we liked community ownership, nor did we say david asper shouldn't have the team.

as for gameday expierience, you must be have sat in section A in that one game you went to with free tickets 3 years ago in 07. The reason i keep going back is for the gameday expierience, if you dont like it go to Toronto, im sure that you will be much more pleased. (BTW: Toronto is privately owned!!!!!!!!!!!!)
