Commonwealth Stadium 2024 (New or Refurb)

Why we need a bunch of separate threads about Commonwealth Stadium is beyond me but here goes.

Stadium Upgrades

As Commonwealth Stadium ages, the City recognizes the need for upgrades to align with modern event standards and enhance the overall spectator experience. These upgrades will improve concourse flow and address challenges such as concession access and overall accessibility.

The project is currently approved to perform required repairs and ongoing maintenance. The full scope of work required to modernize the stadium requires a substantial capital investment. If and when that funding is approved, design and construction of the stadium modernization can begin.

Previous upgrades include:
Stadium Luxury Suite Renovations (2018)
Wayfinding and Signage Replacement (2018)
CCTV Security Camera Enhancement (2017)
North End Social Fan Zone (2016)
Mid-bowl LED Ribbon (2016)
115,000 square feet of Power Blade Elite 2.5 S artificial turf (2015)
JumboTron and Speaker Cluster Upgrade (2014)
Stadium Seat Replacement (2013)
Stadium Locker Rooms (2013)

You only need one thread. There’s just no reason to have an 8 year old thread. The system will automatically delete inactive threads after one year now but that doesn’t happen for ancient threads as it isn’t retroactive.

Perhaps the Mods could have someone run a report for threads that are still in the system but haven’t been used for a year, and then delete them.

I don’t get this site at all. First why would you want to delete history. There were threads about the new seats in Commonwealth, getting renamed Brick Field and probably others that I won’t look for right now. Why isn’t there one Commonwealth Stadium thread where you can find everything related to Commonwealth Stadium like most other forums have.

If the thread gets too long and unmanageable you start a new one with the same name and archive the other so at least you can search and research on it.

No one is deleting history. All past threads can be searched for and read, whether locked or not. It is only in a rare circumstance that a thread is unlisted that it is no longer available for viewing. That did happen at times in the past and those threads were moved to a moderator’s forum and contained numerous offensive posts. The only threads that have been unlisted to my knowledge in the last 20 months are system generated duplicate threads.

So if you want to catch up on forum history and “necro threads” as they are affectionately called, you are free to do so. Otherwise ancient threads are rarely relevant. There are for example dozens of expansion and rule related threads that aren’t relevant now as opposed to the view from say 2010. As you note, many threads become too large and unwieldy and probably worst of all, extremely repetitive. If members took the trouble to read a thread before posting in it then the repetitive problem would disappear.

That technical suggestion is above my pay grade, but our admin @BetweenTheGoalposts should be able to tell us whether that is doable or not.

Edmonton Commonwealth Stadium’s $250-million renovation dream has no funding in reality

This (below) tells me they must have something significant planned if it is going to take years to complete.

Now I know we can’t realistically compare the two because of many factors but let’s note that the entire Winnipeg stadium was built for less than the price of this refurb. Also, for a more fair comparison in today’s dollars the new Ottawa 12k stand was budgeted last year at 140 million.

“Renovating the stadium, completed in 1978, has been on the city’s radar for years. Administrative staff completed a long-term stadium master plan in 2016. This included a series of potential renovations that each would take five to seven years to implement, but the previous city council decided not to go forward with the first phase in the 2019-2022 capital budget.”

Even though there has been no movement on this project so far, with the re-emergence of the Elks I can see this happening. Calgary got its arena, Edmonton is looking for a bone thrown their way.

It’s much more expensive to maintain. Mostly because an entire crew must be hired.

Add to that grow lights (and the power to run them), aerators, mowers (and the power/fuel to run them), fertilizers, and lots of water (up to thousands of gallons/day).
