Commissioner for a Day

I’d implement CFL 3.0

a field that is not turned into a skating rink
if grey cups are insisted upon bein played in out door stadiums

  1. move season so gc is played BEFORE clock change
  2. movekickoff to 4pm local so most of game is played in daylight

the above 2 dont guarantee good weather but make it a much better bet

the biggest game of the year cannot be played on a skating rink

also different end zone surface in 1 endzone [causing players to slide and fall down - where is the PA on this ?] and 17 yd endzones at bmo needs to be fixed - those things make the cfl look 2nd rate

i say 15 yd end zones across the league
place goalposts at back of 15 yd endzone - i think this will lead to more going 4 it on 3rd down
bring PAT to common spot for both or just do away w/ single pt pat
get rid of rouge - if payer give himself up in endzone , team gets ball at 25 yd line
would hate a team to win gc based on rouge kicked from 10 yd line

Why reward a player for giving up?

If the defense fails to protect its endzone, they don’t deserve 25 free yards. They deserve to surrender points.

Also, the goal posts, logically, should be on the goal line.

do u really want to see a grey cup awarded to a team cause they scored a rouge kicking the ball from the 10 yd line ?

that would be very embarrassing

then give receiving team ball at 15 yd line as an enticement to run the ball out

posts are in the way of play [nfl moved posts to the rear - are they illogical ?]move cfl posts to the back of a 15 yd end zone

If the defense failed to stop the offense from getting to the 10 yard line to kick a rouge, they deserve to lose. I would not be embarrassed.

I also would not give a team 15 free yards for giving up behind their own goal line. They should give up points for doing that, either a safety or a rouge.

As a compromise, I wouldn’t mind if they considered this rule: the defense that is surrendering behind their goal line could have a choice: 1. scrimmage from their own goal line and no rouge is scored, or 2. scrimmage from the 25 and a rouge is scored.

Yes, I think the NFL’s choice to move the posts to the back of the end zone is illogical (crossing the goal line = scoring a goal) . . . and makes for a less exciting game in that fewer missed field goals are returned.

i think the rule currently states that the receiving team scrimmages from their 35 yd line if they give up the rouge

i think scrimmaging from the goal line and not giving up a point is a bit punitive

i think moving the posts to the back of 15 yd end zones would promote more ‘going 4 it’ on 3rd down instead of kicking a 10 yd ‘chipshot’ fg

I’d be fine with the 35 yard line after a rouge.

A team that gives up behind its goal line deserves punitive consequences. If they really do not want to give up a point, they should protect their goal line.

If a team gets possession and downs the ball at the one-yard line, then that’s where they scrimmage, which is what should happen. So why should a team that gets possession and then downs the ball behind their own goal line be allowed to scrimmage from the 35? To my mind, the team that protected their goal line did a better job than the team that failed to do so.

In the proposed scenario, they would have the choice of where to scrimmage but would not simply be rewarded with free yards for their failure to defend.

Yes, making FGs 15 yards longer would reduce some instances of chipshot FGs.

On the other hand, 15-yard endzones would make scoring TDs more difficult, which would increase the number of chipshot FGs . . . and we’d still be missing out on exciting FG returns.

I say keep the 20-yard endzones and keep the goal posts on the goal line and keep the rule for kicked balls crossing the goal line resulting in goals being scored.

I agree that the inconsistent endzone configurations around the league are not ideal, but they don’t bother me that much. I’d much rather see the league remove the middle ten yards than reduce the endzones by 5 each (but I’d most prefer to just live with what we have now).

removing the middle 10 yd would successfully address the end zone issue - both only 17 yd endzones in toronto and corners cutoff in mtl

good suggestion as the middle 10 yds really doesnt serve much purpose

but i still like placing posts at back of endzones, even 20 yd endzones
10 yd chipshot fg is now an interesting 30 yd fg and placement of ball can be same for both kinds of PAT’s

Only to people who don’t know or don’t like the current rules. Personally, I’d be fine with it.

A day wouldn't be enough for what's needed to be done IMO, if I had a few years I'd...

#1. Start talks to bring in new League Partners/Sponsors. The League hasn't had an official Bank since 2012 with Scotiabank. Hasn't had an official beer since 2014 with Great Western. The League has also lost Rona, Lowes, Sunlife, Microsoft, Draft Kings, Post Cereal, Cialis, Wendy's, etc. And IMO Ambrosie has done even worse than Orridge at replacing lost partners.

#2. Make improvements to the game itself by lowering the ratio, and going with a 30 second rolling clock (I'd actually prefer 20, but that most likely isn't feasible). The game needs to be sped up and we need to make it more entertaining.

#3. Find perspective new owners for Montreal and BC. Aqullini's maybe in BC, and either the Molson or Saputo family in Montreal. I'm actually far more concerned about Montreal, so I think that's where the focus should be.

#4. Actually go out and try to find wealthy investors and help figure out how to get a stadium and team in Halifax. Leblanc & Co. may have approached the League, but they're not wealthy enough for the League and needs of Atlantic Canada. If a team does come together in Halifax, then the League should return to 1 bye week. Season would start Mid June and end with the Grey Cup in Mid November. Also, find a way to bring the Vanier and Grey Cup games back together.

#5. Start laying down some foundation to ensure there are multiple bidders for the next media contract. maybe even move away from TSN. Also ensure that there are a separate online options for fans.

#6. Bring back the previous League logo or something like this: http://i65.tinypic.com/29kqbet.jpg

#7. 100% Guaranteed contracts for players after their entry level deal. 50% guaranteed for players on entry levels deals if they make the team out of training camp. Keep the NFL window for players, but have RFA rights for drafted players and neg list players for 5 years. Personally I'd love to see fully guaranteed contracts for everybody, but that is a long ways away still IMO - NFL is starting to hand out a lot of guaranteed money, but even they're not there yet. The NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS, NLL, and countless other leagues have guaranteed contracts, and they haven't collapsed - Time for football to get on board, and for GM's and owners to learn to live with the dumb deals they sign just like the other League do.

#8. If the League insists on this CFL 2.0 crap, then players coming from Mexico, Germany, Austria, etc should count as Internationals. No more special treatment of players who essentially are only in the League due to passports. The best players should play.

#9. Start conversations with CFL teams and the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal Governments to ensure that all Community Parks include Canadian Football fields. Each CFL team should also get more involved with youth leagues (including Flag Football as the Argonauts have done).

Now before anyone brings up that the Commissioner doesn't have full autonomy, works for the owners, and would have to go through the CFLPA for some of these things - I'm more than well aware, and not to mention that this whole thread is hypothetical lol. The Commissioners job is to improve and grow the League - finding ways to get the owners on board and signing off on things, keeping corporate partners happy, and essentially being a buffer for the CFLPA to the owners.

Why would you be embarrassed for winning a game by scoring a point legally?

Would you be embarrassed to win the world series on a bases loaded walk or balk?

The Stanley Cup on a penalty shot or if someone scored on themselves?

You get 6 points for a TD
3 for a field goal
2 for a safety or convert
1 for a PAT
and 1 for a rouge

Why would anyone be embarrassed?

Nice list, except this one. I’ve always felt the Canadian Football League needs Canadian players.

the cfl changed the dimensions of the ball [used to be j5v which was longer and fatter - punters loved it] to accommodate usa qb and them using a smaller usa ball
single pt pat are kicked from way back now just like nfl
where was your outrage then ?

rules should be changed according to the times

I wasn’t pleased with that change either, but understood the reasons. I also wasn’t thrilled when they shortened the goal area, but again understood the reasons. I completely supported the change to allow blocking on punts, and the subsequent change to the no yards rule. There are a bunch of other changes that have made sense, some I supported and some I could live with, but I could at least understand the reasons behind them.

Changing a rule because “it looks bad” isn’t a good enough reason.

its a rule change not cut in stone
it can always be changed back if that bad

also when did sports become such a business
when were wealthy owners not happy with prestige of owning a pro football team ?
increasing visibility and notoriety will get wealthier owners
tom brady has reduced his salary requirements so the TEAM can win by signing players to help them win
is he a bad businessman ? how many superbowls does he have?

What does Tom Brady’s salary have to do with CFL rules?
