According to Perry Lefko of Sportsnet, the Als have sign QB Cody Pickett, formelly of the Argos.
If so,-Lefko rarely wrong- a good move by the Als,since we only have/had 3 QB's signed for training camp. Personnally,I wonder why the Argos waived him; he was not great in Toronto, but good. Since I am not "sold" on Chris Leak, I would not be surprised if Pickett becomes our number 3 QB. I think that he is better than Leak. He was ranked 6th amongst QB in 2004,compared to 12,by Leak,in 2007. Time will tell, but I am/would be more confident with Pickett if Anthony and Adrian were hurt.
Not often, but this time I find myself in disagreement with Richard. I thought Pickett was pretty dreadful in Toronto, and I would be shocked if he turned out to be anything more than cannon fodder in training camp. I don't see any upside in his game at all.
I tend to agree with MadJack on this one. TO, however, was pretty dreadful all around - dropped passes, virutally no running game, poor execution, poor offensive production....
The problem with the backup QB in Montreal, as I see it, is a healthy AC (which is hardly a problem!). I would like to see the second-stringer get in some meaningful reps from time to time. At some point, AC may (God forbid!) go down with a career-ending injury. When this has happened before in football, very often the fans are subjected to 2-3 years of losing seasons while the new QBs struggle to fit in.
Thing is, Jack, how on earth do we separate individual player performance from the gong show that was the Argo offense last year? I know Pickett wasn’t stellar the year before either, but his OC was Steve Buratto, they had a coaching change midway through the year, the team went 0-8 under Matthews, the defense got old and slow and Kavis Reed is no Rich Stubler, and there was nobody to throw to on offense apart from Bruce. Pickett isn’t perfect, maybe he’s not even great, but it’s real hard for me to say he’s dreadful because the team he’s coming from was in shambles.
In any case, it’s not like Cody is going to displace Calvillo, or even McPherson. He’ll be a TC body to push Leak and remind Chris not to take his spot for granted. Pickett will probably not make it through training camp, but on the off-chance he does, it will be because Trestman and Milavonich think he’s worth keeping around. I have faith in our coaches’ ability to evaluate talent.
Who cares where a player ranked 4 years ago in College ? According to Veilleux's logic Calvillo would have never made a CFL roster. Picket showed some good things and some not so good things. Interesting signing.
Regardless of who wins the #2 and #3 spots in training camp the QB cut by the Als will be more than ready to play thanks to the coaching. Must be nice to have 4 guys with experience and ability in camp when a few teams are going to scramble to find a quality guy out of the camp fodder they bring in.
The Als sign Cody Pickett eh? Did they actually WATCH any Argo games last year?
Since this may well spell DOOM for my man McPherson, here's a few links:
AD had a pretty AMAZING highschool career, dominated the Arena football league, was signed by the Saints to a 3 year contract, only to have his NFL career cut short by a mascot in a golfing cart (of all things) There's been some talk of his being blacklisted by the NFL for his youthful indiscretion and for suing the Titans over that incident, and some are wondering if the Als aren't colluding to keep him and his awesome talent on the sidelines. Sounds a bit paranoid to me. God only knows where he's off to now. I only hope he gets picked up by a team that gives him a shot, and the respect he so obviously deserves...
(What was and what might have been)
Do you actually believe the nonsense that comes out of your mouth? Or do you just enjoy spouting drivel for kicks?
Adrian McPherson is still under contract to the Alouettes for two years. If you can explain to me how signing Cody Pickett somehow guarantees that McPherson is leaving the team, I’m all ears. I mean, you know, considering that we traded Santos last season and we thus need a fourth QB at training camp.
Oh I agree it is difficult to assess. . . that’s why Popp and Trestman get paid the big bucks and we don’t.
That said, my impression of Pickett is unfavourable. Sure the Argos’ offence has been dreadful the past two seasons; yes they have a really weak receiving corps, and yes it would be difficult for any QB to succeed there the past two seasons. However, I do believe that Pickett himself was part of the problem; I just never saw anything in him that made me think he has any particular potential. Not very accurate, questionable defence-reading skills, not particularly fleet of foot, not a particularly strong arm. I just don’t see anything there that would make me believe that he is even capable of pushing Leak for the #3 spot. So I agree with you in that I don’t think he’ll survive training camp; if he does, well then Popp and Trestman must see something in him that I haven’t seen and that’s their call, I’ll trust their judgment.
But for someone here to think that signing Pickett puts MacPherson in jeopardy for his job, I just don’t see that at all. Like I said, personally I don’t believe he’ll mount much of a challenge to Leak at #3, so in my mind there’s no way he’s a threat to take MacPherson’s job at #2.
One might, I suppose, suspect that he’s being brought in to be #3 and Leak being moved up to #2 and that MacPherson is going to be traded. . . and while there are certainly teams in the CFL that could use MacPherson such as Toronto for sure and perhaps Winnipeg if none of their 4 guys step up this year, I just don’t see a trade within our division happening, and I have a very hard time of thinking who we’d want off their rosters in any such deal.
Fair enough. I can’t really argue with you in terms of not seeing anything in particular in Pickett. It’s not like I look at him and see a Calvillo in the rough or anything. I just feel that he’s like a blank slate at this point, and I have faith that if he sticks through TC, it’ll be because Trestman and Milanovich believe they can develop him into something.
There is no better place for a young QB coming off a miserable year to play than in the best-coached offense in the league.

Agreed, the whole theory that Pickett’s signing means McPherson is going to be traded is just stupid.
....there seems to be some identity theft going on here......I guess the person wants to imagine himself as one of the better posters.....Nice in some ways....confusing in others....but damned ballsy mostly..... I hope someone straightens this out.....
...to stick with the subject.....I don't see a great deal in Pickett either.....but then he's better known for his rodeo skills.....Maybe Popp can get him a horse?????
