A young Saskatchewan woman with cancer died just hours after being granted her wish of attending the Grey Cup this weekend.

Kaila Berg of Shellbrook, Sask., died Monday in her Edmonton hotel room with her mother by her side.

She was 18.

Berg was one of 12 people battling cancer who were sent by the Chris Knox Foundation to attend the CFL championship game this year.

The foundation was established in memory of a lifelong Rider fan that got to see his favorite team win the 2007 Grey Cup in Toronto.

Since then, it has sent other young people battling cancer to sporting and cultural events throughout Saskatchewan.

Premier Brad Wall issued a statement of condolence for Berg's family on Monday.

"I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the Berg family on the passing of their daughter Kaila," Wall said.

"Kaila was a courageous young woman who was enjoying the opportunity to attend the Grey Cup with her mom and with the other families who were there," Wall said.

Rest in peace, Kaila. You were a great student to work with, and a beautiful person to know.

There is still a tonne of good in this world. Thanks, jm, for sharing.
