I understand and it is why I feel that a candidate such as Dan Hawkins has less chance that a candidate such as Turk Schonert. Hawkins has been out of football-coaching- for more than 2 years and he only coached at the college level; Schonert is a Head Coach and has a staff; some of his assistants could follow him; yes,I know that some of his assistants have to know/have experience in the CFL and there are candidates. Marcel Bellefeuille was a coach in the UFL and Schonert must know him. Doug Berry and Mark Nelson are definite candidates; with regards to Nelson, I hope that the Als won't lose him to Hamilton.
Danny Maciocia has an advantage with regards to assembling a coaching staff, but I hope that he will not be hired mainly for this criteria.
Schonert was only a head coach for four games with the UFL last season. But he was a college QB at Stanford, he’s worked for Walsh (just as Trestman did ) Actually interesting because he credits Walsh for teaching the QB position to Steve Young while Trestman took the credit for it. While Hawkins is a career HC working his way up to the point where he took his eye off the ball at Colorado and ended up with a bunch of misfits on his roster. He also has a reputation for being a very hands off coach so he would require some strong assistants. That’s why the combination of Hawkins and Schonert might be the best thing. Its late in the season to source Canadian coach but Americans are right in their hiring season. Schonert and Glanville know each other. Maybe Glanville might be willing to help him out like Martino did with Trestman. We have Thorpe under contract for now. Then there are a bunch of guys who are available that are going to have to start considering position coach jobs. Guys like Bellefeuille and Lapolice can hold out but Berry’s been out of work for a while now, Marcus Crandell will likely be available as well.
While Herb has been really good lately in scooping out information, the fact that he got all 4 finalists from outside sources is kind of hard to believe. You can get 1 or 2 from an outside source, but getting all 4 suggests to me that it was leaked from someone on the Alouettes.
As to why, thats pretty hard to figure out. You could speculate that they wanted to test fan reaction to the 4 names, but I dont really think they care what we think. Although they might be a little afraid of D&P.
Very possible, Popp mentioned “candidates currently in the NFL”. Haven’t heard of any of those but I could see how someone in the NFL would want to keep something like that quiet in the event he is not chosen. Also given the press release you would think Chapdelaine is going to be invited, he has not removed himself as of yet at least publicly.
Danny Maciocia has now 2 votes. I wonder who voted for him. Danny himself? Someone who is not a fan of the Als? I would like to know. Can the Danny fans stand up?..
Slant registered on the forum within hours of it being announced that Trestman took his job with the Bears. It is not unreasonable to view him as having skin in the game. He’s welcome to push his candidate or himself for that matter and I welcome him to argue his choice, that’s what a forum is all about instead of antagonizing the members by asking them what Berry has been doing in the last year and then taking offense when someone makes a remark about his “horse” well…
Slant sorry you feel shame. For me Trestman was a great coach here but the way he left has spoiled it for me. I will not get into the details again. I wish him the best in Chicago however however I am very skeptical that he will be successful.
[i]If Maciocia is chosen as head coach, Johnny is gonna start a “FIRE MACIOCIA” thread the same day! Enough already! This team practically needs a Superman as head coach to get everything reasonably prepared in time for the season.
Johnny don’t expect such a candidate to be found, but the Als can at least avoid hiring the dancing bozo who “pulled a homer” back in the 2005 Grey Cup.
I’m hoping he’s only there because of the “Rene” rule.
IMO Maciocia is what I call a “poser”.
Here is one of my favorite quotes from someone who worked for him.
His predecessor (Maciocia) I could handle because when you looked in his eyes...you could see there was NOTHING going on in there. He didn't have any evil plans or schemes...he was just clueless.
Then there is his draft record from 2007 to 2010 in Edmonton, while some will say well he'd be the coach not the GM. Well if you can't evaluate prospect what's the chance your going to recognize potential of the kids coming on the roster ?
Then there is the problem that in almost 10 years in Edmonton, no one EVER has ever heard him utter the words “Its my fault, its on me”. Never. Maybe that comes with being the son of a politician ???
One of my favourite highlights is Stegall’s last-second touchdown catch against Edmonton…you couldn’t get two more different reactions than Berry on one sideline going berserk with joy, and Maciocia on the other with that “deer in the headlights” look.
