Chamblin's defence

So, if MB recognized that Calgary was keeping TE's in to block for more QB time and using swing passes to counter as well then why didn't we adjust our defensive coverage to this?

Intersting tidbit form Perry Lefko’s power ranking last week prior to the Labour Day games

Defensive co-ordinator Corey Chamblin may have picked up a tip or two watching how his former Stamps’ boss, Chris Jones, defenced the Als, notably in the second half. He used a lot of zone and it clearly frustrated quarterback Anthony Calvillo

I believe that Chamblin and Jones are becoming the real deal in only their first year as co-ordinators. Great stuff.

Works perfectly. Thanks.

A great story by Uncle Milty

Two weeks ago, Ticat defensive co-ordinator Corey Chamblin tweaked some priorities to free up the ends, particularly Baggs, to come at the quarterback with a little more gusto and not be as concerned with certain other chores. The immediate result has been a much more urgent pass rush. It hasn’t resulted in any interceptions yet, but it’s forced a ton of crappy throws and barely catchable balls.

“This is still Corey Chamblin’s defence, but he switched up a few things and he’s allowed us to use our ability to win games,? praised Baggs, who was also deeply inspired by good friend Otis Floyd’s uber-gregarious presence on the sidelines.

Head coach Marcel Bellefeuille confirmed the change in defensive responsibilities to allow Baggs to do what he does best, but also said Baggs has become “a more disciplined player, a better defensive end. As he gets better at understanding all the responsibilities of a defensive end, more plays are coming his way because he’s always where he’s supposed to be.?

There definitely seemed to be more pressure from the ends this week, and last week too (if the number of holding calls and non-calls is any indication). And without losing containment, as was evident on Baggs’s chase down of Whittaker a couple of times (one in particular comes to mind).

Quite the balancing act to provide both pressure and containment, and both Baggs and Hickman seem to be doing just that. Well done, guys.

Yes, what a great piece!

I especially loved the ending:

The improved play of the front four, along with the constancy of the mobile linebacking corps, helped the beleaguered secondary as evidenced by a terrific end zone knock-down by cornerback Ryan Hinds on the final play of what was truly a wipeout.

Hinds’ play, long after the victory had been iced, allowed the Cats defence to escape without surrendering a touchdown and that’s against the most prolific passer in league history and most consistent offence of this century.

And if this turns out to be the beginning of something, it started at the ends.

I was worried about Baggs’ ‘absence’ from being noticed on the field this season, even though I knew Chamblin had him doing different things, but in this Montreal game both he and Hickman were dynamos out there.

This is very encouraging as the team seems to be getting stronger as players like Baggs and coaches like Chamblin and Jones continue to learn. This can be an awesome team. I’m feeling really good about it. This second half of the season can be the breakthrough we’ve all been waiting for, for so long now.

A win again next week? Dare I dream? Hells yeah!

Hickman has owned Josh Bourke in the 2 games we have played Montreal this year. 4 sacks in those 2 games alone.

I think Stevie Baggs has played his 2 best games of the season these past two weeks.

Ryan Hinds likely won't be in the discussion for Most Outstanding Canadian, but he should be.

Ryan Hinds is an excellent cornerback and our most consistent player in the secondary. Non-import or import, he’s one of the top CB’s in the league.

Couldn’t agree more. He is my fav current Ticat for sure.

Here's a good article on Chamblin's Defence

X3

Ryan is finding a groove. He is playing fearlessly!

What I saw on Labour Day IS the recipe for this defensive unit, IMHO. Much more disguise as to how the front seven pressures, more zone blitzing and drop zones, mixing coverages, etc. – while letting Baggs and Hickman hunt the passer a lot more. It is as close to how Sudsy operated as Chamblin is ever going to get and it did rattle AC a lot. Permutations on this theme are the way to go, not reverting to a ‘we’re sending the house with seven on the LOS’ kind of nonsense play after play. Man coverages work best when the QB is forced to hesitate because the variety of front seven pressures cause him to hold the ball for a split second more and that he has to move from his designed launch point. If the Cats can continue to dial up that kind of approach, we will see sacks, hurries, and turnovers rise in the coming weeks.

Oski Wee Wee,
