CFLers signing NFL contracts

Woohoo we need the good help too for next season despite having a great line, but they are older and really beat up after so many solid years here.

We’re all waiting with baited breath as to which NFL team Nathon Rourke signs with.

Will be surprised and excited if Rourke decides to stay with the Lions for another year to two.

would love to see Rourke back and would be awesome for the league. but i think it’s a forgone conclusion he will sign with an NFL team, just which one. im really interested in seeing if some of these other big name CFL players who had workouts will get futures contracts, like Kian Schaffer-Baker for example.

Rourke’s play in his short season was better than some NFL caliber quarterbacks.

Now will he actually get a legitimate chance at the NFL? Time will tell.

having this thread gives me mixed feelings - on the one hand i am happy for these CFL guys that do get NFL contracts and follow their dreams and make it. on the other hand, for every player that goes south, it’s one less in the CFL talent pool…

If the CFL really cares about addressing player turnover, the salary cap might need to be higher or at least some salary has to be guaranteed and this practice of cutting players before bonuses are due needs to be addressed.

Yes, but in the CFL. It doesn’t automatically translate to playing at the same level in the NFL.

That part is true for sure because he will be viewed as some QB from Canada until he actually wins a starting position.

Chris Streveler is still trying to prove he belongs in the NFL and he’s been at it for 3 seasons.

Hardly earth shattering #'s

The 24-year-old spent this past season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, recording three defensive tackles, three knockdowns, and 10 special teams tackles over 18 regular season games with one start

Of course every year, we are left with many returning after cuts though now it sucks for the player when the last cuts are on Labour Day weekend and more than half the CFL season is over already.

I don’t know how the process works and maybe somebody can fill in the blanks on this matter.

There has to be a more streamlined or better way all the same to bring those experienced players back who otherwise left their team on good terms, and if not to the same team for any number of reasons, to have them available for readier return on any given other team.

NFL scouts are often looking for a particular raw skill set, rather than a complete package. especially for positions like special teams, backup defensive backs, depth players, practice roster/ scout team. there was a 3DN podcast not long ago where they talked about the process of how NFL teams scout and select players out of the CFL. they don’t necessarily look for the best or star players, they tend to look for cheap (to them) depth options to fill out backup special teams and practice roster/ scout team roles.

Stupid question but I'm assuming (after reading the Streveler article) that a "futures contract" is one step up from a standard Practice Squad place as it guarantees a salary for the whole season, whereas a player who is simply "on the P.S." can be cut at any point?

It’s really just a standard contract that doesn’t count against the salary cap until the new NFL league year kicks in in March.

Streveler can still be released and added to a Practice Roster.

What is a Futures Contract?
It’s the same as a regular active-roster contract, with the regular rules for minimum veteran salaries, cap charges, signing bonuses, etc. The only difference is that it doesn’t take effect until the start of the next League Year (this year, that’s March 11 at 4 p.m, per CBS Sports).
Teams can sign players to futures contracts as soon as the previous regular season is over, but the contract won’t count against the salary cap or 53-man limit. Instead, it’ll count against the salary cap and 90-man camp limit of the following season.
In the meantime, the player goes on the reserve/futures list and can’t be signed by any other team.

Who’s Eligible for a Futures Contract?
Any player who wasn’t on an active roster at the end of the outgoing regular season. So, if a player was an unrestricted free agent or on any team’s practice squad, after Week 17, they can be signed to a futures contract.
Here’s the rub of the futures contract: For the most part, they’re used on players who weren’t quite good enough to justify an active roster spot this season but who teams think just might be worth an active roster spot next season. In many cases, this means teams locking up players currently on their own practice squad or another team’s.
