TORONTO — With Canada set to mark 158 years as a nation, all Canadian Football League (CFL) players will proudly begin wearing a patch of the Canadian flag. The addition – a first in league history – comes at a time when Canadiana and red-and-white pride are flowing throughout the country and uniting communities behind the maple leaf.
Our new commissioner’s idea to require CFL players to wear Westjet’s nifty Canadian flag patch was probably an easier sell than Lucky Star’s Extra Lethal Cigarette Company’s idea to have CFL players wear their cool looking nicotine patch.
Did you read the article? It goes on at length explaining what this new Canadian flag patch on the front of the jerseys represents. Meanwhile, they’ve had a Canadian flag sticker on the back of their helmets for years. Clearly there must be a different meaning to that, if they felt the need to explain the patch.
A Republican is back in the White House. Guess that means it’s time to brush off the only thing that counts for “national identity” in year 158 of this country:
It’s so sad to see what became of the nation my grandfathers fought in WWII to protect and defend.
They are. All nine teams are represented in the montage. It is interesting to note that they’re the only team to have both national and provincial flags on their helmets though. Perhaps a good practice for the other teams to adopt, including the two teams whose names are related to their province and not just the cities they play in.
How do you figure that? it evolved from Rugby but didn’t really become football until the forward pass. In the US the forward pass became legal in 1906, the forward pass in Canada wasn’t legal until the 1930s
As for basketball, it evolved from the British netball which was around well before basketball. But the rules for basketball began in Kansas by a guy that was born in Canada
Well, no, they weren’t wearing the flag patch in last week’s game. They have since explained why: they didn’t get them in time to put them on the jerseys.
I have asked about the provincial flag on their helmets and got only typical internet derision for asking. But it does make me curious if they are getting funding from the provincial government to wear the flag. Or why else would they wear it and no other team does?

That’s suspicious on the team’s part. I guess patriotism only counts when the GOP is in the West Wing and the Liberals desperately need a winning issue…
Seeing them with the patches on the jerseys last night, I noticed they were also wearing a provincial flag patch on the other shoulder. Makes me think that those are the patches that didn’t show up in time for last week’s game. And now I am wondering if there is some provincial law in Quebec that requires the provincial flag to be worn any time the national flag is worn. That would be a Quebec-sort of thing to do…
