CFL Players should stay off of Twitter Completely..

Agree. There is so much that is interesting in the world but for every story that is good for the soul/mind, there is a story about what Kim Kardasian is wearing, about Miley Cyrus’ newest nude photos and/or Bruce/Cate Jenner’s recent bodily changes - those 3 things I don’t have any interest in and can do without. Sadly, they get the higher amount of play.

What are you talking about? Players in the mid 90s all got free housing and most got free cars… The salary cap was ridiculously low,but not a single team followed it. Player definitely had it better in the 80s when the BC Lions actually had 10 players earning six figures… Then the CFL did tighten its belt a little and imposed a 2.5 million dollar cap,but teams never followed the cap and gave out free housing and other perks.
That is why teams like Edmonton were always winning and never missed the playoffs. They payed more than everyone else. It wasn’t until literally ,under Mark Cohon’s that the CFL actually got a salary cap that was enforced.
The cap went from like 2.5 million to 4 million, but by all accounts, it was a huge paycut for the players… They lost their free housing, they lost their free cars and the CFL actually hired auditors and punished teams for going over the cap.
Precisely at this point, the coaches salaries rose sharply… Assistant coaches went from making 50k to 160k in less than half a decade. The CFL made a huuuge miscalculation when they capped players expenses, but not coaching expenses… Teams like Montreal now pay more for coaches and administration staff than they do on their players… With the fall of the Canadian dollar, US players actually earn less now than they did 10 years ago and that does not take into account inflation.

Here is something to behold.. This following article is from when the CFL had just signed an 11 million per year dollar contract with Carling Okeefe. My inflation calculator tells me that 1 dollar in 1982 is now 2 dollars and 30 cents. So in essence the CFL contract in 1982 was just over 25 million dollars, or almost as large as the record contract we recently signed. However using that same 2.3 ratio.. Check out how much player salaries have shrunk... Yeah the coaches salaries have grown substantially like Jauch wanted to, but the players really have taking it hard.http://www.argofans.com/showthread.php? ... es-in-1982
The lowest payed player on the list made 65000 dollars in today's currency.

Then teams stopped being in danger of folding…

I suspect your recollection is slightly selective. Said otherwise, I think you’re maybe remembering the top percentage of players (like that whole marquee player nonsense) and applying it to the entire league.

Not at all.. The Marquee rule was done in 96 with a few players like Doug Flutie grandfathered in. The CFL was lucky when they first brought in the SMS that the Canadian dollar was near parity. Now that it is set to go down to 60 cents, players will be earning historical salaries for American players will be lower than they have been since the 1940s. The players in the mid nineties may have received similar salaries as today's players will at 60 cents( what the dollar will be next season once oil hits 38 dollars a barrel after Obama makes peace with Iran) but those players all got free housing and cars. Today's player gets a 4 and a half hour practice day .

Here's a recap of the Twitter Wars. Kind of amusing from the safe vantage point of a neutral team. Must be a little disturbing for the Stamps though.

The exchange rate is irrelevant. The league pays in Canadian dollars. They can not do anything about the exchange rate.

So that being said (and likely ignored as usual), what was the average (or minimum) salary back then as opposed to now? Are you saying that players were making $85,000+ in the mid-90’s? I’m willing to accept that, because I truly don’t recall, but I’d really like to see it supported.

Here’s a little something along those lines:

(Darren) Flutie remembered how hard it used to be to maintain a residence in the U.S. while playing in Canada. He said he made $80,000 in one season with the Edmonton Eskimos, but only ended up with around US$45,000 by the time he made it back to New England.

Now I don’t know if that was considered average. since they single out that one season, I doubt it.

For kicks, that $80,000 in 1997 or so would be worth $112,442.00 this year.

And now Jasper Simmons has been released. Hope his agent is pleased.

Here is a link to an article with a real good perspective on this whole Twittergate insanity that now sees Simmons released and now out of work thanks to his agent and his big mouth. I’m not sure if Simmons will be picked up by some other team in the league at this stage ? maybe re-signed by the REDBLACKS ? Lions (Eliminion out ) Riders ? Who really knows at this stage ?

Nik Lewis set the the bar nice and high with the “glove and white woman comment” couple of years ago.

Hard to top that one.

If he does sign somewhere, I hope it takes a couple more weeks. Lose a few game cheques then review the process used to get where you are.

Another link from 3 Down Nation on who actually won/lost in the Simmons for Price trade and Simmons subsequent release:

Well I guess he owes McDaniel a huge thank you... This crap got him released ,but with Solomon going down,he will land on his feet in BC if you believe Vancouver radio

It looks to me like homer radio could be right for once.

What a mess to arrive at this point.

Signed with my Bombers.. Doesn't miss a sngle game cheque... His agent did his job
