CFL Honour Roll, Week 3: Bethel-Thompson, Beverette, Argos' O-line make the grade

TORONTO — McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Tyrice Beverette and the Toronto Argonauts’ offensive line are at the head of the class for Week 3 in the Canadian Football League (CFL) Honour Roll powered by Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Punter Nik Constantinou had a great game but I don’t think he was the best punter of Week 3. In my opinion, John Haggerty had a better week.

Constantinou: 8 Punts / 53.1Avg. / 37.3 Net Avg. / 2 in. 20Y / 1 in. 10Y / 75% of punts travelling 50+ yards

Haggerty; 6 Punts / 56 Avg. / 44.3 Net Avg. / 3 in. 20Y / 2 in. 10Y / 100% of punts travelling 50+ yards.

I would like to know what statistics PFF uses to grade punters. I would argue it isn’t assigning the proper values to certain stats.

It’s a bit weird, because their bread and butter is obviously NFL football, so some of their metrics feel a bit skewed to me (hyper-emphasis on run-stopping linebackers, which means they don’t seem to count players who are nominally listed as DBs but who play outside LB positions in the CFL).

I think they generally do a decent job of assessing DL performance, given how they explain their process. But there’s work to be done in other areas when it comes to adapting their system to three-down football.

It’s extremely frustrating that they refuse to show CFL data to the public. Why can the USFL + UFL fans get this in depth analysis but we are left to take their word on it? I don’t know. It’s tough to agree with some of their decisions.

Because the U.S. is the centre of the universe? Didn’t you know?

Seriously, though, I share your frustration. I know their metric for running backs focuses almost exclusively on pass-blocking (or at least, it did last year), which seems crazy to me.
