CFL Field Size

IMO, the field size is the single most unique aspect of our game and one that dictates successful and unsuccessful styles of play.

One cannot over emphasize the importance of the field dimensions.

I agree, changing the field size is one of the dumbest things I’ve read all day.

Try stuffing an extra man onto an NFL field and still allow for unlimted motion. The game would drastically change and become just a cheaper NFL. Boring. Why would anyone watch Canadian football if it were exactly the same as the NFL, minus the grandeur and spectacle.

Our game is built on it differences to American football and I, along with many other, like it better that way. It’s faster paced and more exciting. As well, it’s very much CANADIAN football.

Also, changing the dimensions of a field isn’t just rolling the turf in, cutting it off and slapping down more seats.I sincerely hope that if anyone of authority reads this thread, they disregard it’s suggestions as stupid and counterproductive to the Canadian identy of the game.

its the honeymoon season...people are going to see the new stadium, new team and a league most dont know anything about, except Backham plays there....heck, even i was lookin for tickets and i have no interest in soccer. i just wanted to go check it out.

they'll be gone within 7 years.

take that to the bank.

You nailed it DrummerGod!

The new BMO field was designed to eliminate the possibility of a football team ever playing there! I live in Toronto & work for this dysfunctional, Socialist enclave!

The new stadium should have gone in @ Varsity Stadium's old site and included the Argos, MLS, Soccer Canada, and Rugby Canada as well as a new practice rink for the Leafs! That was supposed to happen! That would have ensured its feasibility... but Olivia Chow took over!

Thanks to her and her left-wing buddies on Toronto City Council, Toronto is NOT allowed to enjoy football or any other jockularity!!!

The Leafs draw hear because they're THE LEAFS! They're the exception! Toronto is not a good sports town! We're a good Starbuck's town!

i like the argos playing at skydome.

id like the dome to get a more updated look, thu renovations, but, i also feel to be considered a MAJOR sports team in toronto, you have to play in either the ACC or the dome.

if the argos played in a small stadium outside of that area, theyd feel more minor league to me.

maybe its just me.

I think this is all part of Steven harper's "hidden agenda". Slowly but surely unique pieces of Canadiana will start falling away. Next thing you know BCE will be bought by the Americans.

Don't say you weren't warned.

(Yes - I am kidding.)

here's a question:
what exactly is wrong with trying to model something that is proven to be successful? why are we, as canadians, so anti-everything american? I realize that the US does a lot of dumb things, but they also do a lot of things very successfully. Professional sports is one of them. No one is suggesting we just become NFL north, but you cant deny that the NFL is one of the most successful and financially stable pro-leagues in the world. The CFL is not. So the NFL is obviously doing something right. Whether we change any rules, field size, marketing plans, etc, rather than being so hostile towards anything thats not 100% Canadian, why not look at what other people have made work and learn from it?

p.s. in terms of professional sports, the CFL is minor league.

I guess it was only going to be a matter of time before a disgruntled Canadian tossed in the anti-American argument. *shakes head

but they also do a lot of things very successfully. Professional sports is one of them. Hey there shared_legend ... I would SUGGEST the SUCCESS you speak of has more to do with MARKETING and PROMOTING than the GAME ITSELF.

I have said it to ANYBODY who will listen ... the NFL is a MADE FOR TELEVISION game ... it is more HEAVILY PRODUCED than most SITCOMS ...

As an OBJECTIVE OBSERVER, I have found the CFL game INFINITELY more ENTERTAINING to watch LIVE than an NFL game ... the faster play clock and less commercial breaks are what I attribute MOST to this.

However, through the MEDIUM of Television the NFL is TRANSFORMED into a very entertaining SHOW ... complete with STORY LINES involving some MAIN CHARACTERS.

The NFL is a HYPE MACHINE. It SELLS itself BETTER than ANY LEAGUE on the Planet.

If there is any AMERICANIZATION to be done in the CFL ... then I predict it will be in the MARKETING, PROMOTING, and TELEVISING of the games ... not in the RULES, or REGULATIONS (ie field size).

Peace.

P.S - These are the VERY REASONS I am EXCITED about the NEW COMMISSIONER ... he has EXPERIENCE in the AMERICAN HYPE machine ... I predict you will see some VERY DIFFERENT things on TV in the coming years of the CFL.

i agree...cfl is more exciting, nfl puts on a better tv show...

our announcers are the worst! ( even our tsn FNF theme music is terrible )

There is another possibility to consider. Instead of going to all the trouble of changing stadium dimensions, we can simply increase our population to 10 times its current level. Then we will have a domestic TV market comparable to the NFL's.

(Call me a radical, but do you think maybe the billions of $$ of TV revenue has helped the NFL become such a success over the years?)

Right on, Pat. If we had the viewership of the NFL, we wouldn't require any other source of revenue in this country.

The TV audience would make this plane fly with no other assists.

I've had enough! Anyone know how to remove a profile from this site? I can't seem to do it! I'd love to get away from this Star Trekkie BS!

Stay on ub40. Anyone who says the NFL wouldn't be any different if it went to 3 downs on the same size field as they use now is lacking a few marbles upstairs. I'm with you. I love the Canadian football tradition and our rules for sure but I love football even more than this, change all of our rules to American for all I care and I would still love attending games here in Hamilton at IWS. Why? Because I just love watching football, period. The CFL must, like any league, constantly be looking to improve, not change for change sakes but adapt to a changing environment when need be. If they take a survey and if the survey, if done right, suggests strongly that many new fans would be attracted to attend CFL football in Hamilton if they changed to more American rules, then the Tiger-Cats and the CFL needs to look at this data very closely. This is the entertainment industry, pro sports, and the customers are a key ingredient.

have no interest in soccer

Have to admit also dg that I was interested in going to a soccer game at BMO even though I have no interest in soccer. But every time I say I'm going to get into soccer and I go and watch it on TV, premiership whatever, I then realize why I don't like watching it, it's a great game obviously but it ain't my cup of tea. No wonder the boys at Harvard and McGill back in the 1800's found soccer boring and decided to go to rugby as their main field sport played with a round or somewhat round ball!

BMO stadium is beautiful! They just should have put it at the U of T and included the Varsity Blues, Rugby Canada and the Argos! The jock haters at North Havana City Hall made sure it was soccer only, though!

I've heard it would cost $15 million to renovate it to a football-capable site by relocating the south bleachers ... should that ever need to be done! Nice forward thinking!

The Argos could still use SkyDome like the Als use the Big Owe!

PS Earl... I do think I'm missing some marbles; but, as the saying goes, if you think you're crazy, you probably aren't!

I think there was a lot of politics going on in Toronto with this new soccer stadium. What exactly I'm not sure but I would venture that Rogers basically sweetened the pot so much for the Argos to stay at their stadium that they had to stay there, maybe even threats along the lines of saying Rogers Sportsnet will really give bad press to the Argos/CFL if they move to MLSE's stadium. Maybe the Argo owners would have contributed to the new stadium to make it football friendly, who knows. But I don't think that Rogers wanted to see them playing out of a MLSE complex. Lots of competition in Toronto between Rogers and MLSE and the smaller boys in town like the Argos and Rock who aren't owned by either have to be careful what they do. Maybe I'm reading too much into the scene there, not sure, but don't think so.

Anyone who says the NFL wouldn't be any different if it went to 3 downs on the same size field as they use now is lacking a few marbles upstairs.
Hey there Earl, nice pearl of wisdom there ... EXCEPT for the MINOR FACT that NOBODY in this THREAD even came CLOSE to saying this !!

You are RIGHT ! ANYONE who would suggest the above - would be "lacking a few marbles" ...

and CONVERSELY,

ANYBODY who thinks the CFL game would not be DRASTICALLY TRANSFORMED by the removal of 150 sq yards ... is absolutely STUPID !!

Furthermore -

I'm with you. I love the Canadian football tradition and our rules for sure but I love football even more than this, change all of our rules to American for all I care and I would still love attending games here in Hamilton at IWS. Why? Because I just love watching football, period.
This is DOUBLE SPEAK, NONSENSE !! Do you reallize how WISHY WASHY you sound !!??

AND MORE ...

If they take a survey and if the survey, if done right, suggests strongly that many new fans would be attracted to attend CFL football in Hamilton if they changed to more American rules, then the Tiger-Cats and the CFL needs to look at this data very closely
SHOW me this DATA !!

For the LAST TIME ... this is a STUPID IDEA ... it is not a matter of OPINION, either ...

Peace.

Meanstreak, nobody here said that about the NFL field size, you're right. I was just trying to emphasize that people who say you can't play Canadian rules football in an entertaining way, the rules other than field size, on an NFL size field are not seeing the whole picture. Just my opinion, I might be wrong.

Yes, our game would be drastically changed but, again in my opinion, not to the point it isn't football or not worth watching.

Double speak, wishy washy. Hmmmm. Again, all I'm saying is that if the rules changed to American rules, I wouldn't have a hissy fit and not go to games. I would still go because I love football, even though I enjoy the Canadian rules as they are now. Not too complicated there bud but hey, if you can't comprehend this, well, I know the name of good shrink. Just kidding, had to throw that in there.

There is no data, I agree, that I know of. Ideas that are stupid, good, bad etc. are all all opinions, that's all, yours, mine, whoever. Again, just saying if a survey was done and if the data indicated such and such... that's all.

Holy crap, I agree I'm not the brightest wick in the world but I do like throwing ideas around and I do want to keep football being played in Canada, the CFL, and I just want to see the league survives. I love the 3 downs and the rest of our rules and want to keep them. And right now the league is on an upswing and things look excellent so no need to tinker in a major way, I agree. But no harm thinking about stuff and discussing stuff, right?

Now reading your post again and seeing the number of times you mentioned stupid, I would almost think you were calling me stupid, hmmm  Remember, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.

Now reading your post again and seeing the number of times you mentioned stupid, I would almost think you were calling me stupid, hmmm Wink Remember, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me. Thumbs Up
I ADMIT, I have occasion to live up to the nickname ... good to see your skin is a little thicker than some of the other semi-permeable membranes around this place.

Although I ENJOY debating, and discussing IDEAS ... I am NEVER SHY to tell you all EXACTLY what I think about them ...This is just ONE of THOSE things that should NEVER be MESSED with ... TRULY.

Peace.
