Not sure how McCallum ended up taking it over Medlock. Just shows how little the people on the selection committee dig into the stats.
And Cox over JJ? No surprise there. For the same reason.
But congratulations to Hickman. Well deserved.
And I too prefer us taking the team trophy over any number of individual awards. As I'm sure most players would as well (unless they're just looking to pad their resumes on their way south).

Just did my own look at the stats ... McCallum looks like a good pick to me.
Which leads to a digression ... there was not a single PAT missed by any kicker this season ... completely validating my opinion that the play should be eliminated from the CFL game ... it's a complete waste of time. 2 pts or nothing, period.
Medlock hit from a further AVG, can't remember how much further that was, but IIRC from the middle of the season it was quite a bit further. But if McCallum didn't win that award it would be a joke!! He had the single greatest season by any kicker EVER.
Medlock's average was a full six yards longer than McCallum's. Put into perspective, Medlock's average was almost 20% longer than McCallum's. While McCallum's percentage was quite impressive, Medlock's much longer average together with an almost as high percentage should have been considered.
I would imagine it was considered, but after considering it, they decided to go with McCallum. After all, he scored an amazing number of points and had 30 consecutive FG attempts. I can't argue with the choice.
Well, then you may like what Rey Williams had to say in that article on The Scratching Post. He also referred to it as a "popularity contest" although he did not say he'd use that as motivation in any upcoming games. Still, you have to wonder if he and other players may believe they have something to prove. And as was pointed out in another thread, Arash Madani had that "once Hamilton gets eliminated" quote here: http://rodpedersen.blogspot.com/2011/11 ... n-mix.html
Anyway, when I saw "Williams slams TSN" in the headline of that article, I thought it that didn't seem like something that Chris Williams would do. So maybe I should have known it was Rey Williams who slammed TSN.
The other thing is, McCallum only missed 3 kicks all year, and none shorter than 47 yards.
For giggles, I crunched the accumulated percentages within each distance for Medlock, McCallum, and for Sandro’s 2010 season. (percentages based on all attempts at that distance and shorter. And these are based on distance of the kick, not the line of scrimmage):
The thing about a question like this is it doesn't take into account age. This year I would have been happy with either of the two kickers, but there is no question about it, McCallum had a better year. Would I trade McCallum for Medlock, no, McCallum only likely has 1-2 years tops. Medlock could be around a while, but his downside is he is an import.
Like I understand how some of the Ticats fans are mad that Medlock didn't get chosen, but Medlock didn't have quite as good of a year as McCallum, yes he hit from a few yards farther, but McCallum only missed 3 field goals all year!! And those three were from outside 47 yards, while he was perfect from outside 50. Medlock missed 1 from inside 40, and 3 from inside fifty, while outside the 50 he was a respectable but not great 4-7. McCallum defiantly deserved the nod IMO. It was close, but McCallum was the best kicker in the league this year, and proved it by breaking the records.
