Hamilton, Ontario – The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that that team has acquired non-import tight end/long snapper Steve Schmidt from the Toronto Argonauts in exchange for a conditional draft pick in the 2012 CFL Canadian Draft.

“Steve is a versatile player who will be given an opportunity to help our team on offence and special teams,? said General Manager Bob O’Billovich.

Schmidt, a 6-4, 232-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba played in 31 games over the last two seasons with the Argos after being selected in the fourth round (30th overall) of the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft. The San Diego State product has made 10 special teams tackles and six receptions for 58 yards.

Seems like a slightly smaller Pavlovic. It's always good to have 2 snappers around.

I would imagine that Matechuk is still their #1 guy.

Not only does he push Sadeghian, Fournier and Brown but he can LS also.Pretty versatile kid that can really do anything that you ask.And it's always good to convert players from the dark side of the CFL

I don't know how much the Ticats wanted Schmidt for his long snapping, he's still in the learning stage there IMO after seeing some of his snaps in practice. But he has pretty good hands and decent speed to be a good over the middle receiver.
He didn't get a lot of good chances with the Argos last year (who did) but I can remember a couple of nice receptions he made going over the middle that made you say hey, this guy could be a player.
I expect Obie saw the same thing.

Thanks for the insight Doubleblue and as a LS it’s likely he’s expected to back up Jordan Matechuk as we have nobody else capable of doing so.As a FB/TE he will be expected to fully compete with Fournier, Brown and Sadeghian for the starting job.Methink’s Sadeghian will be on his way out very soon or during/after TC.He hasn’t really done anything in the year or two he’s been here and there are lot’s of players dying to take his spot on the roster that CAN produce. All I know is we didn’t have the FB element to the game AT ALL last season with John Williams/Andre Sadeghian starting and we really need every single element of our game to be firing on all cylinders if we hope to win the grey cup.

Not much of a long snapper, a little too light for a lineman and a little too slow for other positions, he's one of those guys who have a hard time finding a position they can play. Maybe OB wanted him for depth.

An Argo-Cat fan

He will come in handy on first and goal from the 5. A big inside receiver who can who can catch a TD pass or block for Cobb.

Schmidt did catch 31 passes in his senior year at SDSU, so, yes he can catch the ball. Argos have a surplus of young Canadian receivers, so Steve got caught up in the numbers. He can be a useful role player type guy.

Trouble is he didn’t do any of them real well with the Argos and couldn’t find a lasting role after two years on a 7 and 29 football team. Made a few ST tackles.
The change in organizations may help - the draft pick may be conditional on Schmidt making the Ticat roster.

Well, Obie’s really high on him and think’s there’s very little chance or him NOT making the roster.Think the kid has talent but wasn’t in the right system in Toronto. In Obie I trust.
GO CATS GO!
