Canadian Premier League joins forces with Spain-based media partner

Less than 10 weeks before kickoff, the Canadian Premier League has unveiled its media partner with ambitious plans to showcase soccer in Canada.

Spain-based Mediapro has struck a 10-year deal with Canada Soccer Business, which represents Canada’s national teams as well as the fledgling CPL, which kicks off its inaugural season April 27.
A source said Mediapro is investing $200 million into the Canadian project over the lifetime of the deal. Scott Mitchell, CEO of Canadian Soccer Business, calls it “the single-largest commitment any company has ever made in terms of soccer in Canada.”

The agreement gives Mediapro global and domestic media rights to the CPL, the Canadian Championship and rights for all home games of the Canadian men’s and women’s teams. It also includes rights to League 1 Ontario matches, a feeder league under the CPL umbrella.

CPL and Canada Soccer Business officials say the partnership will help grow soccer in Canada.
“It’s easy to define our plan in one sentence — we want to build a home for Canadian soccer,” said Oscar Lopez Garcia, CEO of Mediapro Canada.

Great news. These kind of partnerships and exposure will help grow the game. Millions of kids are playing soccer now so the interest in the Forge FC and CPL should eventually get established.

Great news ??

It is great news, but keep in mind that $200 million “Investing” isn’t $200 million into the CanPL’s coffers.

A portion of that will be going to the CSA for the national team portions of the team, I would think likely a portion from V-Cup games, a portion to CSB overhead and a portion of that will be in investments for Mediapro (IE: Their production costs to televise and market).

That said, if the CanPL teams are even getting a third of that money in direct investment, that’s huge and pretty much will pay for the talent costs, right there.

It does go to show that the CFL 2.0 investment in Europe could pay dividends if one of these Media Giants over there wants to televise CFL games

Great news for Canadian Soccer and the Hammer

Now Mediapro has reached a deal with CBC that will see ten CPL games carried live on the CBC network. The ten game schedule includes 3 Forge FC games starting with the league’s inaugural game next Saturday the 27th at THF.

Ten additional games will be live streamed on and CBC’s Gem streaming service. Sure would be nice if the CFL could get some games on an over the air network.
