The sad reality is that Ontario has not hosted a major sporting event (Olympics, Commonwealth Games, PanAm, etc) since Hamilton hosted the first British Empire Games (to become the Commonwealth Games) in 1930.
If anyone is due, it's us.
(Thanks Sports Canada and other bungling bureaucrats for shafting us out of possibly hosting the 2014 CWG.)
Hey you guys in the GTA should be happy that you have the games. Great opportunity for the Ticats.
Having a track for Athletics is fantastic, there are just not enough facilities in Ontario. You need to put up a winter dome over the track and the field, there is only one covered track in Ontario and that's in Ottawa.
Our new "Pan Am Zone" at the West Harbour is going to be the Crown Jewel that our City desperately needs!
The location is perfect, and is going to provide a much needed link between Hamilton's beautiful and popular Hourbourfront and our not so beautiful or popular Downtown. This link will help transform Downtown to an equally beautiful and popular location
This will speed up the Light Rail that is being proposed for our city which will connect the airport to the downtown and further the harbour, along with Mac.
Trust me, with this Hamilton is rightfully going to take it's place as a world class city once this is all said and done. Truly a historic day for Hammertown!!
Anyone that think this location is a bad idea is not thinking about the big picture and how what this investment can do for our city!!!!
Back on February 23, 2009, the City of Hamilton selected the West Harbourfront as the first choice for the Pan Am Stadium and lands near John C. Munro International Airport as the second choice. There are currently no other options on the table.
Just got home from work and turned on TV. Wow, we won! This will take a bit to digest, something positive for Hamilton, nice, very, very nice! And to those detractors who say a waste of dollars, well, I'll write a cheque right now for $100.00 and send it off to the games committee, I want to see facilities for our youth. But more important a sign that athletics is important. I remember running in OFSAA 4 x 100 relay at the old Ex Stadium in Toronto with CHCH TV and one of their cameras right there, I was the leadoff runner and man was I pumped, I was on TV!, and what an incredible experience that was, so the stands weren't full except athletes there but to run in the iconic Exhibition Stadium of the Argonauts, my favourite team AT THE TIME, well, what can I say, it's had lasting memories on me and I continue to try and keep in shape to this day to have that good body image I want. I credit that in part to that experience running in a 30,000 seat stadium home to a great CFL team and Grey Cups. I'm getting tingling right now thinking about it to be honest.
Now that we have been awarded the games. Is it a certainty that Hamilton will get a new Stadium? What is the general consensus for the location? Harbourfront? I see this being a very positive thing for the city of Hamilton!!
I want to run on the track! Hey, for $25.00 you get to run on the track to raise money, I'm in!! Man am I pumped, athletics is fantastic, it really is. I know not everyone had the experience I grew up with track and field but it's a great sport, you don't have to be big and tough for football or all that skilled at soccer, just have to love to run, throw the javelin, whatever, it's something that is very, very important for society, athletics for our youth.
