Camp Battles - DB

17 Defensive Backs on the roster currently, and the biggest question, is who will try to replace Breaux?

I'm going to say ...

Stewart
Gainey
Lankster

In that order.

#Ticats DB Brandon Stewart an early candidate to replace Delvin Breaux on the hot corner. #CFL #minicamp

seems to put Stewart as first in line. I haven't seen much at all of the new guys to say where they fit but there are a few tall dudes on that list. My take on Stewart is if he has trouble in covering SJ from inside, can he be expected to cover a Duron Carter on the outside? Only camp will tell. I really like Stewart... as a half-back.

Stewart will have the advantage over the newbies of knowing the schemes and system. Gainey and Davis are faster guys and with the changes in down field contact, a tough battler on the outside may not be as good of a fit now. Unless of course it's a freak of nature like Breaux. Not many of those in the league though.

Interesting spot to watch for sure.

Coe
Gainey

Gainey I've seen and like. That Coe guy was with the team last year, no?

Also, can this year of birth be correct?

24 Coe, Michael DB International 6.01 190 1983-12-17 Alabama State

Yes and yes to both questions:

Coe dressed and played in 3 games last season early on in the schedule before suffering a season ending knee injury in Calgary and was placed on IL the rest of the season. His stats in those 3 games were 16 tackles,1 tackle for a loss,2 pass knockdowns.

His DOB is indeed correct, he was a 5th round draft selection of the Colts back in 2007 and is heading into his 9th season as a pro and will be 31 yrs old heading into T.Camp.

Down to 14 going into camp after OTA's

28 Butler, Craig DB National 6.02 196 1988-12-19 Western

starters from the Grey Cup we have left - Stewart and Murray at the Half, and Canucks Butler backed by Daly, King at Safety and Stephen on the half.

Look for half of the Remaining 14 to make the 46 man roster.

@LB74 - apparently Stewart was trying out for Breaux's position at mini-camp this week. He had his difficulties at DHB last year, and I was calling for his head for taking stupid (and selfish) penalties, as well as being beaten like a government mule. FWIR, his natural position was CB, so this may work in his favour. With the return of Ellis Lankster and the experience he gained in the NFL, it could be quite the battle.

Not to split hairs but you actually have 15 players listed, but technically if you minus Eric Harris off the list you have your 14 going into TC. Although the roster lists him as a DB , Harris was actually one of our three starting LB's last season along with Lawrence on the other side and Reed in the middle, although he did play some at safety in his 1rst season and like Murray and Gainey are hybrid players who are basically LB/DB . You could also basically eliminate Miller who was listed on the depth chart last season as a LB all season but was basically a SS and special teamer. King and Daly are also basically ST players/reserves and in reality IMO have no shot at being regular starters. So realistically out of the players on your list there is actually 11 players (2 returning Cdn starters in Stephen and Butler)and 9 imp(10 with Murray) vying for the remaining 3 starting positions.

Here would be what I would say is an updated list of the DB's Competition heading into TC:

(5)Returning Imports: R.Murray/B.Stewart/E.Gainey/E.Davis/M.Coe/
(5)New Import Signees : E.Lankster/N.Brassel/J.Posey/D.Calhoun/A.Williams
(2)Slated Cdn starters : C.Stephen/C.Butler
(2)Slated Cdn reserves : N.King/M.Daly

Predicted/Projected Starters/Reserves after final cuts in T.Camp barring injuries/unforeseen trades/other circumstances.

Imports: starters-R.Murray/B.Stewart/J.Sears
Import reserves-E.Gainey/E.Lankster
Canadians: starters-C.Stephen/C.Butler
Canadian reserves-N.King/M.Daly/possible 2015 draftee
Veteran Imports on the bubble:E.Davis/M.Coe
Cuts or possible P.R.-N.Brassel/J.Posey/D.Calhoun/A.Williams
