Calvillo "Re-Surfaces"

Im responding to posts on an open Forum. You dont want rebuttal start a blog.

You think Popp is no longer a competent GM , its a perfectly legitimate opinion which I obviously dont agree with. But to keep repeating its because he doesnt live here is getting Senior like and I will respond.

Ill trust Popps judgement as to what the scouting priorities should be. And if Andrew not happy with him, why are they negotiating a new contract? They have the perfect opportunity now to cut ties.

And by the way Jim Barker lives in Calgary and Milanovich in upstate New York in the off-season.

There you go again making shiat up and putting words in people’s mouth. Show me where I wrote that Popp is no longer competent ?

I don’t care how they run things in Toronto but obviously when the GM is living two time zones away pretty hard to demand your coach establish himself in the city he coaches.

When i watched the video with Calvillo I thought it was neat that Calvillo was participating, with others at this player evaluation. He certainly has the experience and wisdom to do such. Is this the beginning of Calvillo's new role with the team? Many QB's have gone from the player position into coaching with some success- Jackson, Lancaster and Jackie Parker come to mind. Should Calvillo remain a part of this organization, I don't believe this would hinder Higgins role as head coach. With respect to Popp, he has contributed greatly to our success in the past decade and, should he continue in his present role I believe he and Higgins would be compatible. Popp in not the only scout on this team. Okeke, Edeme and others also participate in that function and, have shared Popp's success in that role. I agree with LeStaff that our Canadian scouting has produced good results.
However, we are presently not in that last decade and, Popp's ambivalence has been a problem to the organization. Will he leave or remain? That ambivalence- "will I go to the NFL or stay with this team"is not productive as he has recently not given the team his full attention. This cannot be done when he is searching for NFL offers? We have a new coach, whom I thought was productive with Edmonton and, his assistants are in place. Will AC be another member of this organization? I believe the owner of this team has to firmly deal with Popp's ambivalence and, decide if he stays or goes. We need a GM who has a strong desire to commit years to this team. We do need a GM who will give 100% effort to this job.

Just imagine if Whettenhal had gotten to the GM-HC scenario a little earlier on in the off season. Three weeks may have been 6-8 weeks and Higgins could have had his “things” settled before these combines allowing him the time to participate.

Niagara...I too thinks its neat that Calvillo is participating at the combine.

Not so much for Higgins being at the regional combine, but absolutely the coaching hire should have been done earlier. The most important reason would have been to give Higgins access to a better pool of assistants.

I kinda think Higgins got the two he wanted based on his speed of hiring and history with Worman and Sweet. I think Higgins was well aware of getting the job long before it was announced.

One question that seems unasked and unanswered: Earlier Popp seemed to indicate an offer had been made to Cahoon. Has any reporter asked what became of that offer? Or do we just assume that offer was pre Higgins and then the offer dried up because Popp was not HC any longer?

Better prepared in all facets of the game! The Als are way behind their competition the way I see it.

Interesting comment from AC to Sask. broadcaster Rod Peterson:

LEFTOVERS FROM A.C.: In the MMG I recapped Anthony Calvillo's moving speech at Saturday's Regina Thunder Champions Dinner but I left out a couple of interesting comments from our Q & A. Calvillo said Don Mathews was the best offensive coordinator for whom he ever played. I suggested that "The Don" is remembered as a defensive specialist but A.C. countered with, "That's what everybody thinks but he designed the offense and Jim Barker called the plays!"

Don was the greatest “coach” to patrol a CFL sideline in the modern era possibly ever. Wally is also a fantastic coach but nobody innovated or “reached” players like Don.

AC graduates this weekend. Congratulations!

A.C. has decided to join the coaching staff this season afterall.

Obviously his experience can only help the offense and young QBs.

That’s great news! I was hoping this would happen following the firing of Worman. Now RD can concentrate on playcalling and Anthony can work directly with the quarterbacks.

OK, wait a minute. Is Calvillo joining us THIS year or next year?

Au jour 17 du camp, il a annoncé qu’il fera partie du personnel des entraîneurs de la formation montréalaise de la Ligue canadienne de football en 2015.

So this is for the future, not now? Dang.

Oh wow, got faked out. It was originally on RDS mentioning this year, since taken down.

I guess we have to muddle through 2014.

And in hindsight, it might have been unnerving to RD to see the enormous shadow of pro football’s all-time passing leader as his QB coach when he himself has so little coaching experience. For better or worse, RD is in charge now. Let’s see what he can do with our stable of quarterbacks.

He was on CTV sports today he is at TC but I missed the beginning

NOPE not this year

I figured. It would be too rushed and he had stated his intention all along to spend some time off with his family.
