Calvillo MOP

Its a metric kind of thing, 7 seasons = rookie just like dog lives

Wake up Jacques Hass he beat Edmonton 40 to 4 and played 3 quarters. He deserves this award. Burris isn’t even in the same league as Calvillo or Ray.

I think both were very close, and the award would have been well deserved either way, but I have to point out a major flaw in this quote… Hank was not 8-1 against teams .500 or better. Off the top of my head I would say 8-4, which is still very good if you include the last game where he left with a lead.

Chief with out Henry Burris at QB do you rally think the Stamps would have won 13 games? Now that is halarious! I congratulate AC for his win and that might be all he wins.

a little cocky are we red?

‘Oh, Henry’s not smiling’

Stamps QB admits he and team feel slighted by award-night shutout

By ERIC FRANCIS

MONTREAL – You’d have to have a pretty small heart to dismiss the beautiful story authored by Anthony Calvillo this season.

But you’d also have to have a pretty small mind to suggest he was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player this year.

However, that’s exactly what Canada’s football reporters did last night at the CFL players awards where 27 of the 46 voters gave Calvillo his second MOP award.

Yes, the Montreal quarterback did indeed have a slightly higher efficiency rating and four more touchdown passes than west nominee Henry Burris, but the Calgary pivot had 400 more rushing yards and two more wins.

And while further scrutiny of their numbers proves conclusively Burris was more deserving of the award, the bottom line is simple.

At the end of the day, Burris overcoming his turnover temptations doesn’t compare to what Calvillo, his wife and his family had to overcome: A cancer scare.

As it turns out, wife Alexia has been given a clean bill of health, and Calvillo responded by bouncing back from one of his worst seasons ever to his very best. Stirring indeed.

With that in mind, Calvillo is the far better story, and let’s not forget the award is handed out by storytellers.

None of that excuses the fact Calvillo had a losing record (3-4) against teams with winning records and racked up 21 of his 43 touchdowns against glorified CIS clubs from Hamilton and Toronto.

Burris’ record against winning clubs was 8-3, leading the Stamps to the West crown over the three best teams the league has to offer.

Yet, the best quarterback on the best team didn’t win. And it irked Burris.

“The thing is, we’re the best team in the league record wise and nobody came away with anything,” said Burris of an awards ceremony that saw teammate Sandro DeAngelis edged as top special-teamer.

“But I guess that doesn’t mean anything.”

After mumbling something about being “robbed” Burris laughed, “Oh, Henry’s not smiling. Hey folks, I’m a competitor – that’s what I do for a living, I compete.”

In a MOP vote that clearly saw voters stay loyal to their divisions, it appears the swing votes were the “national” media who reside almost exclusively in the east.

However, the news wasn’t all bad for Calgary supporters and the 20 Stamps players who left Casino Montreal plenty upset that, as expected, their leader wasn’t anointed the winner. The Stamps have pointed repeatedly towards the recent all-star snubs, and this will only serve to stoke their fire in Sunday’s Grey Cup against host Montreal.

“All I know is we’re 6-0 against 27 all-stars,” grumbled Nik Lewis, referring to the Stamps perfect record against B.C. and Montreal, who had 13 and 14 all-stars respectively.

Former Stamp Vince Danielsen said earlier this week it was at the 2001 Players Awards he and his teammates first felt they’d upset the cocksure Bombers, who dominated the awards and got the Stamps’ blood boiling. The underdog Stamps won that year 27-19.

“I’m devastated for Henry,” said DeAngelis. “We’ve been slighted a lot as a team, and hopefully, we use this as motivation Sunday, when it will be decided by our skill, not somebody’s opinion.”

This year’s game is a pick 'em many believe will be decided by the slimmest of margins.

And what happened to the Stamps leader last night may just end up being a factor in Sunday’s outcome

Pretty well somes it up!

It's not like Henry got beat out by Kevin Glenn. This is Anthony Calvillo, a great player, who had a fantastic year! He deserved this award. Dorsey also had a great year, it's not like DeAngelis was by far the best Special Teams player. He did have a great year but so did other kickers.
The biggest upset is that Wake didn't get every vote for defensive player of the year. That's unbelievable to me.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Whether you agree with the outcome of the Player Awards or not I think the composition of the voting panel is unfairly balanced to those areas with the greatest population base - i.e the East i.e Toronto. It's not a bloody federal election - each team should get an equal number of reporter voters. Yes, Henry probably did deserve the award but he didn't have the opportunity to schmooze with the Toronto sports media to the extent AC did.

I am sure everyone is intellegent enough to know that a football game can be won or lost by any combination of defence, special teams or offence. To say one quarterback has more wins or losses then the other is not proper. It is the teram that has more wins or more losses. Who is to say that in some of the Calgary wins, it was the offence that won it for them and not an excellent defensive effort and a mediochre offensive effort , or any other combination? This goes for all teams. Losses may be easier to blame a quarterback if , say for instance they throw a gazillion interceptions and fumble a few times (see Bishop). But to say Henry won more games then A.C. is crap. Calgary won more games the Montreal.

Calvillo had the numbers. I know this has nothing to do with a MOP award but he is also very classy.
Burris had some good numbers, not as good as Calvillo and he is also a whinny little baby (this has nothing to do with MOP voting either).
I am glad the AC won the award. He deserved it.

Flashback 2005
B.C 24 points, Calgary and Sask 22 points. All you heard and read in Calgary is that whine whine whine, we should have had 18 players as all stars, we are the best, blah, blah, blah

It grows old after awhile

  1. You need to learn the difference between Most Outstanding Player…and Most Valuable Player!

Poor Whinin’ Hank. But he should keep his chin up. He had a hell of a good year, and deserved to be the west’s nominee for MOP. IMO AC was slightly better. Congrats to AC!

If anyone thought for one moment that HB was going to beat out a feel good story like AC’s they are out too lunch. The media isn’t the only one that thinks HB got snubbed. Stats can be VERY deceiving, until they are broken down. As RW05 posted earlier, stats also show HB coming out ahead of AC.

AC supporters just brush those off. Ignoring them as if they mean nothing. Yup motivation for the Stamps. Shut out at awards night, best team with the best record, hard to imagine.

Go Stamps Go!!!

Ro already posted stats that proved AC played better than Burris against Eastern AND Western teams. Funny how it's only the Stamps who are whinning.

All Calgary does is whine, whine, whine. Hmm.... Put yourself in their shoes and then comment.
This year the Stamps had the CFL's best record, top RB and a QB that had a career year. Their Defence ranked #1 against the run.
Yet they only had 2 guys in line for CFL awards and only 6 West All Stars.

Of course the Stamps whine about everything and they are the only CFL team that has ever complained about anything.
Give me a break!

Funny where did I say that you making things up again.
People forget one stat on there rushing? As you know in the CFL Qb’s not only throw they run as well. Nice try.

Whinning funny you say that did you rinse out your eskie towel yet. Please tell me who had more uards rushing. Like I said in the above post qb’s not only throw balls in this league they run as well . you add the rushing on top of those throwing yards who has better stats. Heck anybody can pad stats in playing in the eastern division. Thats face it the east division this year was a joke.

Welcome to http://www.cfl.ca by the way!

Is that supposed to be an answer?
You quote me and ignore what you quoted?

AC lead in
Yards
TDS
Higher QB rating
and had less picks
But you feel Burris should have won because he had more rushing yards!
