The on-again off-again shlamozzle with the Ticats’ situation is now casting doubt on the Ticats’ continuing existence in Hamilton. TSN is reporting that the Ticats are now looking into the possibility of moving to Burlington.
Further, the Ottawa Renegades’ (or whatever the team will use as its nickname, assuming it comes back into the CFL) situation is far from clear. From what I can gather on the Renegades blog, little has been done with the stadium, and city officials are still dithering. For that matter, if negotiations with Burlington don’t pan out, the Ticats may even move to Ottawa, according to Jim Naylor. Really? The Ottawa Ticats?
All of this begs the question - what is going on? Another question - what is the future of the CFL? When Ottawa bowed out a few years ago, it left with little more than a whimper. I don’t see fans clamouring for a franchise, and I don’t know the mood of Hamilton fans. An Eastern Division devoid of Hamilton and Ottawa seems somehow incomplete.
To my mind, this is further evidence that football in Canada is simply not that big of a deal. If it were, there would have been a vociferous outcry from fans - petitions, marches, phone-ins, letters to the Premier… I have also posted that I would like to see expansion - Quebec city, maybe a team in the Maritimes…BUT I don’t see the outpouring of enthusiasm by fans or any momentum being generated. I think the CFL is a good product, and has great entertainment value, but…
What say you?
