Bud Light Canada becomes official beer of the CFL

TORONTO — Bud Light Canada has signed on as the Official Beer of the Canadian Football League (CFL), opening a new era of bigger sounds and even bigger plays at Canada’s largest single-day sporting event – the Grey Cup.

Had to go with a Yankee beer did we? :-1:

I know it’s brewed in Canada, with Canadian resources and employees. However, no one thinks ‘Canada’ when they think of Bud Light. And how many people order a ‘Bud Light Canada’? It’s an American brand. It’s too bad Canada doesn’t have any decent beer…oh, wait, I think we do!! Several. At a time when we are reaching out for our own identity, why would a great Canadian brand like the CFL go with an American brand? The money better be great.

Wait 'til you find out the nationality of half the players in the league.

Bud/Labatt is owned by a Belgian company.
Molson is owned by an American company.
Sleeman is owned by a Japanese company.

Of the three, I’d avoid Molson.

Moosehead is about the only Canadian-owned brewery with national distribution suitable to sign a deal like this.

As much as I’d like to see Canadian craft/smaller brewers being highlighted, that’s not the point of sponsorship deals.

This announcement won’t change in-stadium product availability - so keep encouraging your team’s stadium to bring in the beer you like (for me, it’s amazing local Saskatchewan craft brewers like Rebellion, Pile o Bones, Nokomis, Malty National, and others).

Despite having international players, the “Canadian” Football League should always place “Canadian made” first.

As for Bud Light, get rid of it and bring in some beers with more taste and flavour. Let’s support the local Micro Breweries and get a broader line of flavours. I’m for Sleemans Honeybrown. At lease it had some history in the Hammer!

Whoever thought this was a good idea should be shit canned

We should ask why this is the case though that Canada doesn’t have more success stories, and remove the people who keep that success back.

<looks at calendar and sees it’s past 4/28>…so much for that thought!

As there are no Canadian breweries other than Moosehead with national distribution capable of sponsorship, I’m not upset with the fact an American brew was chosen. The CFL needs all the money it can get. I am upset with the selection of Bud Light as the beer because along with Coors Light and Corona it is one of the three most vile tasting beers on the planet. Kid Rock had the right idea in shooting this beer, albeit for the wrong reason. :slightly_smiling_face:

Sleemans is owned by Sapporo (Japan).

I get you point & agree. For league sponsorship it’ll never be local micro/craft brewers. This is a sponsorship, pure & simple. Doesn’t impact the beer we’ll see in-stadium, nor the in-stadium advertising.

For example, despite the deal with Bud’s parent (Belgium’s Ab-InBev), Mosaic Stadium will continue with (American-owned) MolsonCoors as a major sponsor with pouring rights in stadium.

I’ve never had a Sleeman, but I did enjoy those ads years ago when watching games on Pirate Sports Network.

It’s now Japanese-owned, but anyway, founded in Guelph, why couldn’t the CFL have chosen a brand rooted in Canada?

We don’t even like Bud Light in large part down here, and that was true already many years ago as beer sales slid because the now under 30 crowd hardly drinks beer.

Boo this choice of yours CFL!

Why would you sign up with the most American Brand you could find? I understand it is owned by Labatt, but then let Labatt be the name not Budweiser. I am disgusted. Bud is linked to the NFL why would we want to be second fiddle to that. Not to mention it is a terrible beer.
