Is there a rule regarding how close to the first down for determining if you have to call in the sticks. I was at the rider game and when they brought in the sticks, most of the time - from the upper deck in taylor field - you could see how close and if they got it or not. just curious.
I think it is within a yard but Im not sure
.........head ref's discretion entirely........
Yes redandwhite I believe you are correct!
OOOOOOO! SO CLOSE! were going have to scrum that!
that is what I call it when the player pule on everyone on 3nd and 1 to get the frist, it looks like a rugby scrum, don't you think?
Something I kinda wish would happen...
A year and a half ago, before I went to set up the rugby field for one of our games, I heard Pat Summerall and some other guy talk about their new invention: A laser first down line.
I think this would be an important step into the future for the top leagues on the continent. The chains are stupid, and require more men than they are worth. Use a line and play to it as if it was the goal line.
Chains and 'dicker' rods are old fansioned, I agree with steve.
lets just get the instatnt replay system working first.......then we can fool around with the rest of the gadgets.......

But, even if the Ref can obviously see that it's a first (or not) because of the position of the ball and forward picket in relation to lines on the field, if it's within a yard he can't refuse a request for measure from a captain....
