TORONTO – Out of the ashes of last year’s abysmal Toronto Argonauts season comes a story that may help the Canadian Football League team win back some fans and even a few games – a college kid from Queen’s trying to become the first Canadian quarterback to start a game in 14 years.

Argos head coach Jim Barker cut ties with every quarterback from last year’s 3-15 debacle during the off-season, and replaced them with a cast of five CFL neophytes. Included in the group is Danny Brannagan, a native of Burlington, Ont., who hopes to be the first homegrown starter since Giulio Caravatta lined up for the B.C. Lions in 1996.

Brannagan’s quest begins today as Toronto’s quarterbacks and rookies start practising. The main training camp opens on the weekend.
