bishop will never win the grey cup and as long as he is here they will either miss playoffs or lose first rounds joseph is twice the qb bishop is...remember he has a grey cup to his name. with the same team that bish pooped the bed during the playoffs the next year. joseph would be a decent qb outside toronto...toronto's receivers are brutal
Careful, jakob, you're going to hurt paul's feelings. . .
Seriously though, it's a valid point about Joseph. He had the MOP season in Saskatchewan but the past two seasons in Toronto he's been, at best, mediocre.
Two things explain that I think. . . both under Andrus and under the previous regime, for some unknown reason Joseph was put in a position of trying to become a pocket passer, which he is not and will never be. Why, under two separate coaching staffs, they didn't design an offensive package tailored to his strength rather than his weakness is a mystery.
Secondly, I agree, that Toronto receiving corps was the weakest in the league this year. Not many QBs would be successful with that group of guys to throw to.
Now. . . that said, if Toronto had a decent offensive scheme with an offensive line that could actually block a pass rusher or two, and a decent set of receivers, would Joseph have been successful, or is it just that his skills have dissipated to the point where he is at basically the end of his career?
I agree. It is a mystery why Stuebler and Andrus would try to change the type of QB that Joseph is. Regarding the o-line, going into this season I thought (like a lot of people) that the Argos o-line would be one of the better ones in the league with the signings they made but instead they were mostly terrible.
I think it’s a given that for Joseph to catch on anywhere now he’ll definitely have to take a major cut in pay. If he were willing to play for a lot less I think he could do well in Winnipeg. Mike Kelly prefers a roll-out passer compared to a pocket passer. Any dislike fans in Winnipeg have for Joseph is based on his killing us so many times in the past but they’d get over it if he played well.
Include me in that “lot of people”. . . I too thought that, with adding Picard and Murphy, the Argos’ offensive line would be one of their strengths. It sure wasn’t. Most of the season, they were either imitating pylons or turnstiles, take your choice.
Murphy in particular was off his game; I recall clearly both Odell Willis (when a Stamp) and Steve Baggs just charging past him to the Argo QB with little or no effort, so it seemed, on Murphy’s part to stop them. Brutal.
So what was it? Was it the scheme or did Murphy and Picard suddenly lose the talent that they once possessed?
And. . . why in the world am I talking about the Argos on the Winnipeg boards?
I can't see the Bombers bringing Joseph in, even if he was prepared (as he'd have to be) to take a major pay cut from what's he's been used to. I just don't think there's any way that he and Bishop could co-exist. Bringing in Joseph would mean you'd have to cut Bishop loose, and I'm not sure there's any upside to that.
Maybe the best way to proceed is to get/develop/trade for a decent starting QB, and keep Bishop as backup.
He's been dreadful in important games as I've pointed out (to some, ad nauseam I'm sure). . . last Sunday's game against Hamilton, the 2007 playoff game and the 2006 playoff game. But as others have pointed out, he did pretty darn good in the playoff game when he came off the bench in relief of Damon Allen. And, as we all know, he's got a cannon for an arm.
Maybe the best thing is for him to be a backup. As in, say the Bombers are losing a game, bring him in during the second half. . . less pressure on him, and with that arm he might be able to bring them back. . . and if not and he tosses a few interceptions no big deal, they were losing at that point anyway. . .
Just a thought. Maybe he's better suited as a backup with less pressure than he is suited to be a starter.
hopefully Kelly is smart and trades for one of BC’s many QB’s… without gutting the team to much, we’re bad enough as it is.
And the purpose of doing that is to win now, not trade for an old QB, have to fill in a bunch of holes and have to find a new QB by the time you do that!
And therein lies the rub. Wally’s not the easiest guy to trade with (remember how he was holding Toronto up for ransom when they were trying to get Damon Allen after Wally had signed Dickenson?).
Not sure which BC QB you’d want to trade for. . . and what you’d be willing to give up to get whomsoever it might be. Wally’s asking price might be steep if he thinks he has the Bombers over a barrel. . . but on the other hand you might want to pull an Obie, as in what he did with Glenn last year. . . he didn’t pull the trigger on a trade, just waited patiently for Kelly to release him so he could sign him and not have to give up an asset to get him.
That might work out better. . . I can’t see BC going into next season with all 5 of their QBs so they’ll have to release one or two. . . but then the one released might not be the one you want. . .
We have up-and-comers to take their place. Simeon Rottier and Zac Carlson will be starters on the O=line by 2011. QP will come around and be our future starter, and if not, Adam Trafalis may step up and surprise. But Glenn’s doing just fine for now. Dennis Haley is an excellent young linebacker, and impressed a lot of people when he filled in for Floyd for a few games this year.
Obie’s not stupid. He built the team with vets to help us win this year, but is filling the roster with impressive young guys for the future.
personally i think we try to go after Lulay i just look at BC's QB's and he's really the only 1 that i would want and have a slim chance at getting cause i look at Jackson and he's getting old so if we get him he's only good for a couple seasons and than we are back to this situation again in 3-5 yrs... Pierce is too much of a liability at this point 1 concussion away from being a vegtable... Printers wouldn't mind but we all know the story there and would wally wanna give him away.
option 1- Lulay for Ike Charlton and Craver
option 2- 3-way deal Lulay to WPG... Reid to Toronto and Moreno to BC... or something good from T.O i dunno what BC needs. than throw in a few prospects and draft picks here and there
What does the past 4 years have to do with what’s happening now?
Yes, the last 4 years have been horrid. But we now have the pieces in place. See, you believe that because we have been bad the past 4 years, that we are always going to be bad. From '05-'08 (and even before then to some extent), we were mismanaged at every level. Bob Young and Scott Mitchell did what they had to do to right the ship. He brought in Bob O’Billovich who has brought in the talent
Obie is putting the pieces in place to be successful for the future.
The only reason you finished 9 - 9 was because of your veteran players.
Glenn
Goodspeed
Gauthier
Bruce
Stala
Floyd
If you think those guys are easily replaced, you are wrong. Your team without those veterans would be the same sad sack outfit that struggled to win 3 games a year.
Heck, just without Glenn, you guys aren’t even a playoff team.
