Bombers unveil "Bob Irving Media Centre" at IGF

From the Bombers website:

The Winnipeg Football Club today unveiled the ‘Bob Irving Media Centre’ at Investors Group Field, named after Hall of Fame broadcaster and voice of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Bob Irving.

“This is an exciting day for the Football Club as we are able to honour someone who has meant so much to our organization over the years,? said President and CEO Garth Buchko. “Bob has been the voice of our football team for almost 40 years and his contributions to our Club goes far beyond calling the games from his booth in the press box at Winnipeg and Canad Inns Stadium. We are extremely honoured to call our new press box at Investors Group Field the ‘Bob Irving Media Centre’ and hope for many more years of his play-by-play.?

Irving began calling play-by-play of Blue Bomber games in 1974 after being hired by CJOB in 1973. He began his broadcasting career in Estevan, Saskatchewan before moving to CKX in Brandon in 1970. Irving was promoted to Sports Director at CJOB/Power 97 in 1982, a position he still holds today. He was also the editor and co-author of the Canadian best-selling sports historical book, Blue and Gold: 75 years of Blue Bomber Glory.

Irving was inducted into the Football Reporters of Canada section of the CFL’s Hall of Fame in 1997 and sits on the selection committee for the CFL Player Awards, as well as for both the Blue Bomber and Canadian Football Hall of Fames.

Great move by the Bombers. Congratulations to Bob Irving. And they even got him by surprise - he got to the press conference and had no idea why his wife, children and grand-children were there.

...Irving is a class act...One of the stalwarts in CFL broadcast...He's a huge part of the Peg and sports...Very deserving..
