WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced on Saturday that the team has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with receiver Dalton Schoen. He was scheduled to become a free agent on February 11 and was listed as No. 19 on CFL.ca’s top 30 pending free agents list.
I assume he signed for a lot less, especially in light of the McInnis deal. I’m guessing Kenny will be on board as well. Hard to say how many deals get closed before tomorrow. I don’t think it’s a bad signing despite the injury.
Panic setting in for Bombers/ Schoen as we are only a day away from Agent communication window. Still lots of good receivers on the table. I think FA will be changing the run-a-way wages for the CFL receivers, and not in a good way.
I’d say this is a great signing for all of us Blue Bomber fans. Injuries are a part of the sport and we missed him dearly last year. Signing Lawyer would just be the icing on the cake although Winnipeg has a great front office and always impressed with the talent they somehow find a way to bring in. Go Blue.
Huh? Schoen is statistically the best receiver in the league, although I’m not saying he is actually the best receiver. You will have to explain how signing him means that panic is setting in. I suspect you would be barking at the moon if he had signed in Calgary.
Ok! What I was referring to is that all the high priced receivers are still on the table and with the communication Window starting tomorow if a team who presently have them on the roster (ie Winnipeg with Schoen) , time is running out to have exclusive negotiations with those receivers before they get higher proposed wages that could have them leave. But I also stated that those receivers holding out for high or higher contracts (with current team or FA) may be surprised that no one is going to pay !
Don’t know what Schoen agreed to but bet it wasn’t as high as he wanted. But agreed because he doesn’t want to be left out in the cold after FA and miss playing on the Bombers (or possibly an other team for a lot less than what Bombers offered.)
In the CFL it’s a little different. Schoen would have a fairly good idea what people out there would be willing to pay for him. Most players have contacts with different teams and they communicate that way instead of talking directly with the GM. There are countless examples of players getting released and the next day they get signed by a different team.
He signed for $175,000, which is really low considering McInnis got $250,000 and someone else just signed for $225,000 whose name escapes me at the moment. Neither of them have Schoen numbers but Schoen might carry injury concerns. It seems that top end receiver numbers have come down from the ludicrous signings of Lewis and Lawler by Edmonton, which is good for the league I think.
As Ted says above and as discussed in another thread, it seems likely that players and their agents have a pretty good idea of what’s out there even before legal tampering starts tomorrow, otherwise it would always make sense to wait if money is the only factor.
