Bombers post $7 Million Profit

Too bad there’s no money in the league to address an increase to the salary cap, or investing in promoting the game. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I expect the BBs are (by far?) the most profitable team in the CFL … as a league I doubt they are swimming in money.

Why take a positive and attempt to turn it into a negative?

The Bombers should be commended for their excellent management and amazing fans. Let’s hope the rest of the league can follow their example and reach similar profitability levels. That would be good for the players and the league in general.

I was directly responding to the inference that because the BBs made a great profit the LEAGUE should be spending more.

Yes I know. I wasn’t responding to your post and gave your post a like. I was following up on it.

My educated guess is that the only teams that made a profit last year were Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and Hamilton. Rather than calling for an increase in the salary cap based on that or based on the Bomber’s profit alone it’s time for the rest of the teams to get their financial act together.

Agreed on both accounts, but I don’t think the league is doing as bad financially as some might think either

It’s only good for the players if they receive a fair share of the revenues they produce

Yes, but what has that got to do with the Bombers making a great profit? The league in general is still underwater financially with at best 3 profitable teams.

The CFLPA has revenue sharing in its agreement with the league, if I’m not mistaken.

Good for the bombers to accomplish this.

 Isn’t this the real only correct response. I hope for all teams to be as profitable as they can manage. Doing small things well year over year will (should) eventually reap rewards.

With all due respect, you don’t know that. In fact ; what it has to do with the Bombers showing a $7million seems to point to the opposite. That profit coupled with the fact that the salary cap went up almost 8% due solely to the fact that league wide revenues went up seems to point to a picture that isn’t as bleak as we’ve been lead to believe

And it stinks. The good news it’s actually an upgrade from what they had before. Thankfully the PA FINALLY has some strong leadership to push back against the league

True no one knows for sure, but as I said, it’s an educated guess.

In the East Toronto is losing a ton of money. Ottawa is sure to be losing as well. Montreal was losing at least $5 million a year before they were recently purchased and it would be reasonable to assume they are still losing money as any improvement wouldn’t seem be enough to erase that deficit.

In the West Calgary and Edmonton with plummeting attendance are definitely losing money and we know Edmonton was munching away at its rainy day fund before they were sold to private interests and things haven’t improved yet. My guess is that BC is losing the most money next to Toronto. Wild spending over the cap and attendance around 21,000 average not including the concert game, which might also be a loss depending what they pay the bands.

No doubt the league is more financially stable than it has been in a long time, but that doesn’t mean that just because the Bombers are making decent money the league is. In fact if not for MLSE writing cheques to cover the Argos my guess is that things wouldn’t look that good overall.

Agreed about Toronto amd Ottawa although Toronto is a basket case all its own. The Montreal figure is pure speculation.. Doubt it was that bad, but again doesn’t mean it wasn’t either. Things were pretty bad in Montreal for a while there. But the wildcard in Montreal is their exclusive broadcast deal. And crowds of 20,000 gets you in the black with the modern day CFL but as you point out with different team spending habits, things can get skewed. But that still doesn’t mean you’re losing money either.

Yeah I was just going on what was published about Montreal losses at the time, $5-10 million a year. So I made an assumption that they still aren’t breaking even. But who knows? Maybe we will learn more eventually if the CFLPA says something about the numbers they get. It’s not uncommon for the PA of any league to dispute the owner’s numbers. The NHLPA has done it more than once.

No they have the TV revenue and the betting revenue.
If you look at the Bombers numbers they state that 14% of their $56 Million revenue was “CFL transfers” which means they received $7.5 MILLION, that would be the TV revenue plus the betting revenue.
All teams would receive the same $7.5 MILLION.
The Bombers received 30% of the $56 Million revenue from gate receipts or $16 MILLION.
Their operating expenses were $47 MILLION I would imagine that most CFL teams operating expenses would be similar. Salaries for players, coaches, admin staff, travel etc the same for all teams.
The Bombers made a profit of $7.5 MILLION with an average attendance of 31,000, we know that most teams averaged well under 20,000 so I doubt any of them except the Riders would come close to a profit.

It’s great that the Bombers made a lot of money. But let’s stop already with bashing the other clubs. When it comes to “wealth” the 2 community owned clubs are the poor sisters of the CFL. MLSE, OSEG are billion $$ companies. Murray Edwards, prime shareholder of CS&E & Peladeau are personally worth billions, Thompson in Edmonton, Doman in BC, Young in Hamilton are personally extremely wealthy. It took Braley to keep the league afloat in tough times. The suggestion by some during COVID that the Riders could step in & save the league was laughable.

It’s great that the 2 community teams are thriving. But let’s quit with the smug attitude. The league doesn’t survive if there aren’t private owners who are willing to support a majority of the teams. Otherwise the 2 so called “profitable” community owned teams would have to play in a sandbox all by themselves.

And the league doesn’t survive without the community teams either.

I don’t see this as a contest and see no point in throwing shade on the Bomber’s profit. All teams have had their rough stretches in the past. As I said earlier, kudos to the Bombers for their profit and hopefully the other teams that aren’t profitable will all become profitable as well. That’s not impossible.
