I did not see this coming.
He still got game but he can only run. His age might dictate injuries if he runs too much.
Sorry @jon …i just initiated another yes he can pass no he camnot fueled post.

Much like Tommy Stevens, Streveler is a specialist, not a legit backup or someone who can take over starters role

No surprise there. I don’t think it’s a bad signing. Do still an upgrade @ #2.

Strev is unique and a net positive add…but he is not the future at qb after Zach retires. That spot still needs to be determined.

Kinda surprised the Bombers are staying with their two QBs who really haven’t produced the last 3 years. Streveler showed last year he can not successfully take over the QB duties when Collaros goes down. He is more of a RB not a QB. But maybe O’Shea knows something we don’t or maybe he has a plan that isn’t going to be last years plan.

He’s a muscled up 3rd down runner. He’s a bull in a china shop that can’t pass.

I have been saying he will be signed and am happy he was. I don’t intend to enter into another debate with everyone else that say he can’t play. That’s been done.

My position remains that he may have benefitted from top notch NFL coaching and could be a lot better as a passer, which is what everyone says he lacks. The jury is still out for me as he hasn’t started a non pre season game in either league for many year and missed much of last year. We’ll see.

It’s funny how I keep hearing. especially from Lions fans, that Rourke needs time to adjust from his much briefer time in the NFL yet no one is saying that about Streveler. I don’t know if the Lions are planning on signing a better backup, but I think they now have the weakest QB room in the league since Chris signed.

I am thinking the lions got rid of the wrong QB.

Personally I hope Strev gets a chance to show his stuff this year a little more than last year. It would be interesting to see him take over if Zach gets injured to see if he can really be a qb 1.

It also would be smart of the Bombers to see if he actually could be a #1 as this could be Zach’s last year.

If I were O’Shea I would use him very liberally and even throw in the odd start so they can get a better read on him if at all possible. Even if Zach isn’t injured enough to be ruled out he is always banged up and a rest or two at his age can’t hurt.

Unfortunately O’Shea has never shown much of a tendency to do this, usually leaving Zach in one sided games to the end or close to it. I think that any team that can throw a second QB that has a completely different style into the game from time to time makes it more difficult for the defense. They did that pretty effectively during Streveler’s first tour.

Really too bad that Toronto based Tim Hortons couldn’t have come up with that "Good Ol’ Football Game ad during Grey Cup instead of the Super Bowl. Speaking volumes…

Forcing O’Shea to get liberal goes against every fibre in his extreme loyalty genetics. Impossible. That would be like getting Randy Ambrosie listed at 6’3", 195 lbs. Ain’t gonna happen.

With Zach in clear decline (fairly slight, still capable of big game moments) and Lawler fleeing the scene of the crime, Bomber fortunes rest on Brady Olivera more than every before. Bombers can still be playoff contenders with Zach turning in mediocre games and Streveler only getting a handful of reps each game. If Brady can hop, skip & jump to near 2,000 yds rushing, 400 to 600 yds receiving Bombers will compete.
Better get Zach & Strevler a bit better protection - cuz Zach is getting shell-shocked trying to rid himself of the ball in under 2.2 seconds.
Barring a ton of available guys who can game manage in the CFL Streveler brings some relief to a grim recruiting QB situation.

Dude is 30, coming off a serious injury, and has never shown he can pass. It’s a good signing if Collaros stays healthy and shows he can still be productive. Then Streveler gets to be that automatic short-yardage conversion guy and running / trick play threat. It’s a terrible signing if Collaros gets injured or underperforms again.

Winnipeg is showing they have no plan at QB for the long term or even medium term.

But Rourke has already proven he can pass. Even his shortened 2022 season is way more than Streveler has even done. And it’s apples and oranges. Everyone needs adjustment from an NFL stint. But the issue isn’t “give Strev time to adjust”. It’s CAN HE PASS? The same question that’s been hanging over him for years.

Streveler has also been back from the NFL for a minute now. You get a mulligan on the year in which you’re cut and come back, which for Rourke was 2024. Not two years later. I’m no fan of Rourke, believe me, so if he tanks in 2025 that will be on him. But comparing Streveler to Rourke is laughable. Streveler cannot throw a pass of 15+ yards with any accuracy and that is an empirical truth, much as you might hate to admit it.

That’s ridiculous and an exaggeration of your position. I get it that you don’t like Streveler, but if he truly couldn’t throw more than 15 yards he wouldn’t be in the league and I wouldn’t think him worthy of a chance either. If you want to find QB’s who can’t throw more than 15 yards accurately you had two of them on your roster last year in Davis and Evans. Davis was done years ago when he left the Bombers and must have had pictures of various GM’s with goats in order to remain in the league. They both have had much more time to show something than Rourke and Streveler and have shown next to nothing.

But we know each other’s respective positions so I’m not going to continue to rehash it. My position is that I would give Streveler a chance to see if he is capable and yours is that he was done a long time ago. Like the NFL did, I still see potential in him. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m not ready to write him off and that’s not because I’m a Bomber fan. I am prepared to write off Bomber players such as Harris and Liegghio and Bighill when I think they are done. I’m also prepared to admit I may be wrong. Hopefully you can admit that you may be wrong as well. No player is a sure thing. That’s all we can do at this point as there isn’t enough evidence to definitively say either way in my opinion. So if you’re wondering whether I get your position I do and you don’t have to bring it up every time his name is mentioned. I haven’t mentioned Evans and Davis since probably July.

And on your new point, I don’t agree that there is some kind of rule that QB’s get a free year of playing poorly when they return from the NFL. There could be some rust temporarily from not starting for a spell, but there is also the benefit of learning the game at its highest level that should make you a better player in theory. Even if your rule or “NFL Pit Pass” existed, which it doesn’t (and I don’t think GM’s and coaches do as well), Streveler was in the NFL longer than Rourke and as a result went longer between meaningful starts and played less than Rourke so his free year wouldn’t even be up yet.

The bottom line is that virtually every player personnel decision carries some risk with it. Certainly signing Streveler does. Most probably would not have thought signing Rourke carried much of a risk, but we can see now that it did as he has played poorly since his return or at least hasn’t come close to meeting expectations. If that continues BC would be in big trouble, much more than Winnipeg, with their current QB roster. Even Montreal dumping Fajardo and going with Alexander is a risk, although one I would have taken. League history is full of examples of QB’s looking like the next one for half to a full season and then amounting to nothing. That could still happen to Rourke and Alexander in theory as neither of them have started and played well for a full season.

Having said that, I haven’t lost faith in Streveler, Rourke or Alexander, but all have plenty left to prove, not just Streveler.

Since when has Winnipeg had a plan for their QB position? More often than not, the peggers have relied on The Scrap Heap or other team’s throw-aways. Kenny Ploen and Ralph Brock being the exceptions. Otherwise - the list consists of: Zach Collaros, Matt Nichols, Kelvin Glenn, Matt Dunigan, Joe Paopao, Donald Jonas, Chuck Ealey, et al. Winnipeg Football Club does not possess the network of birdogs and southern contacts required to develop prime quarterbacking stock.
While on my morning negative rant - Bombers have also had extreme lulls bringing in coaches - other than Bud Grant, Cal Murphy & Dave Ritchie (ok, I’ll give you the Sinister Minister Mike Riley) the Bombers have scrambled thru some awful choices at head coach.
They hit lightning in a bottle with the current guy, Mike O’Shea - who almost single=handedly turned a mediocre team into a contending dynasty. Without O’Shea’s innate ability to get the most out of his players, the franchise would no doubt be in the doldrums.
2025? Still think The O’Shea Effect could get a mediocre & ageing group into playoff contention before giving out down the stretch. 2026 & Beyond does not portend well - especially if O’Shea decides his time here is done.

What makes you say they have no long term plan? Whether that is T Wilson, or another young guy - there will be a 3rd QB. No prospect comes in and has immediate success, oh except for Streveler.
Any plan should prioritize the short term anyways. It’s about this upcoming year. A million things could happen between now & 2026
