Bomber QB Situation and Options

There has been alot of talk lately about the Bomber QB situation going into the 2011 season, i know training camp is still almost 3 months away but we should discuss serious options and possibilities leading up to TC.

As of this post we currently have 7 QB'S under contract and i believe that Mack and Lapo are trying to obtain someone with experience as insurance (as mentioned) if Jyles isn't going to be ready, Bombers are in discussions with Jarious Jackson at this point and would be the safest bet as an insurance/back up plan...... So if we sign Jackson, who gets the boot before TC? Do we place Jyles on the 9 game or the one game (and hope he recovers quick)? If he does recover quick, do we trade him? Here is my take on the situation based on different scenereo's. I can't see Jyles being moved before the Draft, so i will rule out getting any 2011 picks for him if indeed he will/wants to be traded, but I could be wrong and it would surprise me if it does happen.

  1. We sign Jackson ---- We go into camp with Buck, Jackson, Elliot, Brink and/or Wilczynski, Goltz or Champion (i would like to see Wilczynski get a shot).
  2. We sign someone else as insurance and we go into camp with Buck, ????, Elliot, Brink and/or Wilczynski, Goltz or Champion. Player's speculated are Maas and Porter. Here is my take on talent that may be available for TC if Jyles indeed cannot go.
Maas ----- is highly unlikely due to age and he hasn't played much in 4 years.
Porter ---- People see him being realesed by Hamilton, Has CFL experience, is only 28 years old, plays a style similar to Jyles and could blossom in Lapos offense .. I like the option of us picking up Porter IF/WHEN he is released by Hamilton.
Joseph --- Do we go with a 37/38 year QB as insurance, if we can't pick anyone else younger like a Porter he would be an option if he came cheap enough, and having Buck/Joseph as mentors to someone like Elliot would not hurt.
Leak ---- I doubt Mack has any interest in Leak and he is not experienced anyway's.
Bishop --- Been there, seen it, do we do it again Highly unlikely, but would be available cheap and him/Buck could help the young guys like Elliot catch onto the game Quicker.

Of the above bunch i would welcome Porter here to compete!!

JYLES WILL BE IN CAMP TO REHAB AND PUT ON THE ONE GAME IR, WHEN HE IS READY WE EITHER TRADE HIM FOR SOME NI TALENT AND/OR 2012 PICKS OR HE BECOMES THE BACKUP ONCE AGAIN AND EITHER BUMPS THE "INSURANCE QB" OFF THE TEAM VIA RELEASE/TRADE OR HE STAYS ON AND BUMPS THE 3RD STRINGER TO THE PR (UNLIKELY)

Other QB'S that may become available for insurance either by being cut or via trade:

Ricky Santos ---- With AC and MacPherson as 1/2 Santos may be pushed by Paul Smith or another guy who MTL may invite to camp. Mack liked him before and let him go, not much experience but when he did play, he showed he can play .. Still young as he will be turning 27 before camp and his 2010 stats are very good in limited action .... 11/13, 84.6%, 94 Yards, 3 TDS, 0 INTS ..... Burke has seen Santos play and knows what type of guy he is in the locker room, maybe Mack decides we gave up on him too early. Santos would probably be available vis trade, if not released and i can't see him costing much in a trade.

Ryan Dinwiddie --- Just turned 30 so he is not old for a QB , will he stick in Sask? Is he good enough to backup Buck? He did ok in limited action last season, but i do recall alot of underthrows, could he get better under a new system (Lapos)? possibly and again i don't think it would take much to get him IF he is not cut first.

NO QB IN T.O WOULD INTEREST MACK, NO EXPERIENCED (BURRIS-TATE) QB IN CGY WOULD BE AVAILABLE.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPTIONS FOR MACK, SO SIGNING JACKSON IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD, I PERSONALLY LIKE THE OPTION OF PORTER, I THINK HE COULD BE A VERY SOLID BACKUP UNDER LAPOS SYSTEM, PLUS IT SEEMS HE PLAYS BETTER COMING OFF THE BENCH THEN HE DOES AS A STARTER!! I ALSO LIKE THE REAQUIRING SANTOS AS WELL.

Wish I had access to all teams Neg Lists? I heard a rumble about us having a darn good American QB on our list, i would have to look up the name though!!

I doubt the Bombers will bring in more than 4 QBs not including Jyles if he's not ready. I'm pretty sure Lapo said before last TC that the QBs couldn't get enough reps if you had more than that.

Since this off-season will be the first time that voluntary work-outs can be held I would suspect that some of the QBs will be looked at then and we'll see a few dropped from the roster after.

Santos won't be back with the Bombers. I can't see Lapo wanting to bring him back since he was the one who released Santos last season.

Maas, Joseph and Bishop have all probably played their last game in the CFL. I don't think Joseph or Bishop would be decent mentors to a young QB - neither were really technical QBs - not sure about Maas.

I don't agree that Porter and Jyles play a comparable style. Porter is a lot bigger and I don't think he has the mobility of a Jyles or Pierce.

Dinwiddie isn't coming back to Winnipeg. He would not fit the offence of Lapo. He's not mobile enough.

I also can't see Mack having any interest in Leak. I like Elliot and Brink more than Leak. Besides, when was the last time a former Als back-up had any success as a starter after leaving the Als.

Pierce - coming into camp as the #1 or #1a. Don't see him being released or traded. Him sticking around in town and working out here I think is a big plus. He sees the coaches every day etc, they see his dedication, smart move overall.

Jyles - if he comes to camp he's #1b, ie he's likely to start a bunch of games given Pierce's history just like last year. There are few options to win a starting job. TO where Lemon hasn't really lit the world on fire, or BC where he would be #2 but maybe get a chance to move to #1 if Lulay struggles like what happened with Porter in Glenn are basically the 2 best spots. The only other spot open really seems to be #2 behind Ray in Edm.

Brink - The fact he hasn't been let go just yet makes me think they haven't given up on him, though that can change. We can argue over his stats all we like but that will only play one role in the decision making process, they'll obviously look at his coachability, his work in the classroom, and his work in practice.

Elliott - showed some talent and will IMO be brought back and at the very least given the opportunity to unseat Brink if Brink i's brought back, or maybe they try to hide him on the PR or injured list like MTL and Sask have been doing with QBs over the years.

Wilczynski, Goltz, Champion - probably only 1 of the 3 makes it to camp. The 3rd QB spot will go to one of the younger guys. Champion only comes back IMO if Jyles is indeed traded and they don't land Jackson as a backup. He's been in the league for a few years and he needs to be seen as a possible #2 guy or he's not worth keeping around IMO, he'll just be the emergency guy if a bunch of injuries hit again. With QBs now allowed to come in early to work with the coaches per the new CBA and the expanded rosters for rookie camp before main camp opens, I think there's an outside chance that both Wilczynski and Goltz may get a look at rookie camp with one making it to main camp with the above guys. I agree though, Wilczynski has intriguing athletic ability.

Jarious Jackson - I think they are doing their due diligence, if they can get a return they like on Jyles then Jackson makes sense as a guy who can be #2 on the depth chart for a year or 2 and start and win some games if need be.

Maas - not likely, hasn't played much in a while and I think those shoulder injuries a few years ago caused him to lose some zip on the ball.

Porter - Hamilton I think sees Porter and Tafralis as very similar guys and I think probably see more upside with Tafralis if they are thinking of moving Porter. Porter, to his credit, I haven't heard a lot of whining about losing the starter job to Glenn, but I think I see more upside with Tafralis as well and would prefer him. Regardless I don't think either is likely to be here.

Zabransky - from a personal standpoint - no thanks. Not great in the pocket, but can break out of the pocket and make things happen. He comes across as overly confident though and I like a confident QB but not one that has to show it every completion.

Leak - Not likely, we have Brink and Elliott on the roster, I don't think they sign him at the expense of one of the other guys.

Joseph, Bishop anyone other aging retread - Mack is not going backwards

....Jackson re-ups with the leos..... On to plan 'B'...

I think we've learned that until something is officially announced that nothing is a done deal. IIRC Ullrich at the Province is a little hit and miss on his rumours.

Ed Tait is reporting that the Esks are said to be shopping Zabransky and that the Bombers aren't interested.

… i dont ever want to see Zabransky in bluengold… :thdn: He looks like a poor Kerry Joseph and doesn’t have it…

…I believe the Jackson signing in B.C. Iis official now according to tsn…

I'm with you on Zabransky, papa. Not impressed with what I've seen so far. Of young (ish) QBs trying to take the next up to be starters in the CFL the past few sesaons, Durant certainly passed the test, Lulay looks like he has passed, Porter failed, and Zabransky, while I can't say he failed, the jury is still out to put it mildly. I really can't see him as being an upgrade over what the Bombers already have.

I am happy to hear we are not interested in Zabransky, i guess Mack/Lapo remembered the 4 INT'S he threw against us last season in one game ... LOL ...

To be honest i think Porter could be a possibility if he is placed on waivers/cut as many think he will (all cat fans), he had pretty good stats in his rookie year and under the right coaching, offense and Schemes (Lapo) he could prove to be a valuable backup.

yup i could see porter here.. or tafralis.. whichever guy hamilton releases.

i could see it especially if jyles is injured.

heres my way of looking at it right now..

  1. undisputed number 1. buck pierce
  2. backup.. jyles or porter or tafralis
  3. elliot or brink
  4. brink or elliot (one will be on the 4 man, we did have 4 qb's around most of the year last year too)

a guy like wylcienski could be brought in aswell... perhaps on the practise roster.

can never have too many qb's around and honestly.. theres ways to make it work.

Boo Jackson is on the market. Not just a regular kid trying to get to the next level, but a definite football player that could do a lot for many teams with his QB abilities. PLAYMAKER!

Played 2 seasons with the Ohio University Bobcats; Definitely something to take a look at.

4,446 Passing Yards 38 Tds 29 ints
699 Rush Yards 9 Tds
2 Receptions 68 yards 1 Td

Along with Junior College Stats from El Camino Junior College in Gardena, California of:

4,620 Passing Yards 41 Tds 10 Ints

Below you can find the links to my highlight film, they all start the same for the first 10 seconds but it is different film after that. Copy and paste in your URL if not able to click it.

I took this from his Facebook page online and did not think of re-wording his words. These are his highlights, not mine, although I wish they were

Seeing as how you’re marketing yourself/him to several teams, you should probably pony up the case and get into a team hosted free agent camp, let the coaches/GM get a look first hand. That will probably be more effective than posting here. You can probably find that information from each times website directly, the team facebook or twitter sites, or just google the team name and free agent camp.

Try Mr Taman in Saskatchewan.

Well we can strike 2 off the TC list:

WPG DEL IMP Zac CHAMPION (QB) Louisiana Tech
WPG DEL IMP Frank WILCZYNSKI (QB) Rowan College

Looks like we might be going with Buck, Jyles?, Elliot, Brink and Goltz unless Mack makes a move one way or another before Camp, which is possible, guess we will see!!

Down to 5 for now. I guess with Pat White leaving MLB and wanting to return to football, and the NFL in lockout and the BB holding him on their neg list, seems like there's a 50-50 chance we could see him here or the UFL. His style of play could suit the CFL. With injuries to Buck and Jyles, assuming both are still on the roster and healed up, I would imagine they would hold both guys out of throwing in rookie camp and save them for main camp. That would leave Brink, Eliott, and Goltz getting an extended look, maybe 1 more.

http://www.bluebombers.com/article/blue-bombers-to-host-mini-camp-in-winnipeg

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host a three day mini camp beginning Monday, April 11th, to Wednesday April 13th at the Winnipeg Indoor Soccer Complex (211 Chancellor Matheson Road).

The mini camp will feature mainly players currently on the roster for the 2011 season including cornerback Jovon Johnson, quarterback Buck Pierce and wide receiver Greg Carr. A final list of all players in attendance will be issued prior to the camp, as well as filming and media availability times.

Looks like BP’s right on schedule if they are going to have him throwing in April. Will be interesting to see which other QBs will be in attendance.

Not Jyles, apparently; we’re rolling the dice on Buck.

Talk about crapping out before you even walk up to the table. Ken Ploen would probably last more games than Buck and he’s 75 years old. Why not get a walker for Dave Dickenson while we’re at it and wheel him on the field to keep Buck company? Maybe Doug Flutie’s available?

If this is the kind of garbage the organization is going to put on the field year after year, they might as well fold the franchise, put it in a dumpster and truck it off to Ottawa.

 DIE SUICIDE BOMBERS DIE!!!

why even post in here blueface.. you're just some bitter old man arent you? longing for the days of ken ploen... its pathetic man.. attitudes like yours.. the snow hasnt melted and its the end of the world already.

nevermind football dude, its just a game anyways.. hows life treating you? pretty crappy id imagine. everytime you post in here.. its bombers suck this, bombers suck that.. i gotta ask man.. why bother?

hopefully that dumpster you talk of has room for your inflated ass too. cuz honestly the less garbage like you around here.. the better.

glass always half empty eh man... maan your life must suck crap.
