That is a good price, no doubt because of the recent injury concerns.
Although I don’t consider him the best receiver in the league (Lawler is) statistically he has been just that his entire career when not injured.
The start of the reset of the receiver market perhaps which was skewered by incompetent Elks management with the contracts they gave both Lewis and Lawler and perhaps even White in Hamilton, whom I would never take over Schoen.
Dunno Jon. When Schoen was on he was a big catch machine. TD man.
He’s the exact guy we need to keep drives going. Now whether he’s still that guy is the big question.
Hard to say. As Blue says, there is no better big play TD machine in the league. I have to think that his health has something to do with the relative bargain price.
I love this signing. One codicil, Schoen stays healthy and plays at least 14-15 games at his highest level.
Lawler’s signing is very important to at least keep our passing attack on the up 'n up. With only one proven QB in tow (the declining Zach Collaros) continuity is mega-important. Need another shut-down OL/hog to keep the pressure off Zach as he wends his way thru passing progressions. Schoen is also a decent clip blocker in formation.
I have to think Schoen’s signing was expedited by the release of Ontarria Smith to the NFL. If Smith was kept in Bomber captivity, there was no real urgency to re-up Schoen.
The Bombers will get by and can live without a player that is not loyal despite all the Bombers have done for him. We knew we would lose a few players we didn’t want to like Hardrick last year. This is the first one this year. He was only our second best DB at best. Plus the Bombers are a DB factory.
Logan is one of the more exciting up-and-comers in the return game. Certainly an upgrade over Whitehead, no offense to him. Logan was my #3 Punt Returner in 2024.
Whitehead was never really known as a natural return guy like Logan, Gizmo, others. He was an under-sized WR who had a few tricks up his sleeve white at the peak of his athletic abilities. Like many old vets, he’s lost a step. His one remaining super-skill is cashing CFL paycheques.
Could be that Lawler is shrewdly factoring in Zach Collaros’s declining passing skills which could limit Kenny both in receptions and yards. Also, Lawler having to fight for Zach’s continuing “jump balls” may have taken its toll. Better to be on a team where you’re going to have balled proverbially “dropped into a bucket” . . . . while also collecting $20,000 - $40k more per season.
Don’t panic Lyle. It’s still way too early to tell how the Bombers or any team will look after this free agent frenzy is done. And no matter how they look that’s only on paper until they actually start playing. And as we saw last year, the old adage that the season doesn’t start until Labour Day is often true. I wouldn’t be writing off or anointing any team just yet, although Calgary fans must be getting nervous.
