The story behind that play is that the defensive team had just received a five yard penalty.
The Offensive Co-ordinator was yelling for his quarterback to move the ball up 5 more yards, because it was a ten yard penalty. (Which wasn't true, it was just part of the practiced "ruse").
The quarterback asks for the ball from the centre, who hands it to him and you can see the QB march off the 5 yards before accelerating.
My question is...can the play start by a Centre handing the ball off over his shoulder? Or must it pass through the legs of the Centre.
In Canada, it must go through the center’s legs. Now you know! LOL
RULE 4 - SCRIMMAGE
SECTION 2 – METHOD OF SCRIMMAGE
Article 1 – The Centre
At the commencement of a scrimmage play, one Team A player (the Centre) shall
take position facing the opponent’s Goal Line with the ball on the playing surface
immediately in front and shall put the ball in play by snapping it back between the
legs in one continuous motion to another Team A player behind the line of scrimmage.
The ball must leave the hands of the Centre, who shall not touch the ball again until
it has been in the possession of another player.
NOTE: On a Team A kicking formation, the Centre shall be permitted to move the
head for the purpose of checking the position of an opponent prior to snapping the
ball.
Remember there’s also that other odd CFL rule that any kick, other than a dribble kick, that crosses the LOS and is recovered by the kicking team results in a first down, whether first down yardage is obtained or not, even if the kick itself is only a yard or two. The tricks to this play are to make sure it gets recovered - a tap up back into the kicker’s hands could be the safest - and to avoid the No Yards call, which on a tap up means the kicker has to be all alone - throw to lone receiver or back the flat perhaps?
