Pro football's 1st black QB Bernie Custis dies at 88 - Ex-Syracuse star paved way for fellow pivots Moon, Ealey, Allen

Bernie Custis, pro football's first black quarterback who blazed the trail for future stars like Warren Moon, Chuck Ealey and Damon Allen, has died. He was 88. Custis made pro football history Aug. 29, 1951, when he became a starter with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who confirmed his death Thursday

If it wasn't for him the door wouldn't have been opened for the other absolute GREAT qb's like Holloway Ealey, Allan and Moon. Feel sorry for the people to young to have witnessed some of the best QB's the world has ever seen. Didn't get to see Custis but the others were just so much fun to watch. Even when Moon and his Eskimos ripped the league apart for those glory years you had to respect Moon. Lucky to have seen the others as Argos.

Obviously a sad loss but also sad because the US hasn't changed much at all in all those years.

I didn't realize that he was HC at McMaster for 8 years. He was quite a presence in Hamilton for a long time hey?
