Well, I’m officially starting the conspiracy theory: Carl Meyer will be the BC Lions’ punter in 2025.

Take a look at this film;

  • Multiple 55+ yard bombs and even 60-yard punts.
  • Elite hang time in the 4.6 to 5.0 second range.

Meyer was selected 6th overall in the 2024 CFL Global Draft and is already 31-32 years old. He’s under contract through 2026, and this showcase performance is what put him on the Lions’ radar: (2024 CFL Specialist Showcase)

But here’s the issue: kickoffs. In the 2024 showcase, Meyer averaged just 61 yards across four attempts. Flintoft was my #6 kickoff specialist but you could easily argue he is in the top half of the league’s talent.

If I were the special teams coach of the BC Lions, I would re-sign Flintoft to let these two battle it out during camp. Flintoft has no doubt struggled the last 2 years but has also shown plenty of potential. He was my #4 Punter in 2022, up there with Cody Grace, Richie Leone, and John Haggerty. There also just isn’t a market for Flintoft right now and I doubt he will receive an offer from a club. The only team that I could see him landing with right now is Ottawa, and that’s only because Leone struggles on kickoffs, not because Flintoft is a better punter than him. Even then, Ottawa brought in a huge leg in Noah Gettman, who is going to battle it out with Leone.

Another thing, Sean Whyte might have a lot of pull here. Last season, the Lions brought in LS Kyle Nelson, but Whyte wanted Riley Pickett snapping for his field goals after an impressive 2023 debut at the position, and he got what he wanted. Flintoft has been a career holder dating back to his second year in university. Meyer? I’m not sure he’s held before this year. Whyte may prefer continuity after one of the best seasons of his career.

One more wrinkle: Flintoft is an American, Meyer is a Global player. That ratio factor could tip the scales.

Now, there is a very simple solution to all of this: sign Australian punter John Haggerty. The catch? Haggerty is coming off one of the best punting seasons we’ve ever seen. It was overshadowed by Jake Julien having an even better season, but Haggerty just recorded the third-highest single-season punting average in CFL history:

  1. 54.0 - Jake Julien (2024)
  2. 50.6 - Richie Leone (2005)
  3. 50.3 - John Haggerty (2024)

All of this to say, Haggerty is going to, rightfully so, look to reset the CFL punter market, and I don’t think it’s worth it for the Lions to get into a bidding war with Calgary and Toronto (who both need punters) when they already have Meyer locked up through the next 2 seasons.

So those are my reasons why I think Meyer will be the Lions’ Punter in 2025. Let me know what you think!

I’d go with training camp battle. I can’t find any fault with your logic. If Flintoft does get replaced, hopefully the newcomer is as good in the community :crossed_fingers:

Disappointed to lose Mackie, I liked his short-yardage plays last season.
Will we see more running backs/fullbacks taking on short yards in 2025?
Using a QB for such a punishing play seems wrong to me.

I have no idea how Rourke will pan out this year…or into the next 5 years, for that matter.
But, wow, think about the pressure to perform

VANCOUVER — The BC Lions announced on Wednesday the signing of American defensive back Johnny Dixon to the training camp roster.

So I did a small bit of research here and found this article, which mentioned Johnny Dixon
from last April right before the NFL draft:

From the 3Down article, Dixon was injured seriously in the 2023 Senior Bowl and was out for the entire 2024 season.

So in 2024 and undrafted, perhaps Dixon went through the “NFL Run-Around,” as is the case for all undrafted free agents even before being invited to a camp, plus for draft picks in about the fifth round and lower showing up at camp, though usually the draft picks get at least one other shot via the practice rosters before being cut.

Now what’s telling is that as an American, Dixon is now going directly into the CFL without other pro experience beyond the modern FBS within the NCAA.

With the UFL in my opinion in likely its last substantive season or last season period, for if the UFL is changed into something else or rebranded at all for 2026, I am going to read that development as simply “The Meat Squad League” for the NFL and a fake pro league.

I wonder how many more veterans of NCAA Pro Football who go through the “NFL Run-Around” will take notice instead of spending two or three years in that NFL program, as in so much of the past.

Getting a chance to make a pro team in the CFL sooner, and to show your skills and abilities in an actual game is huge and stands far above all the workouts and tryouts, plus you know, you are playing actual football and not simply still training hard for it in a second year of the “NFL Run-Around” or in some lower pro league.
