I think the only thing that the new coaching staff owed to these guys was the chance to try and make the team. They gave them that, and for whatever reason, they were unable to do it.
So Desjardins owed them the chance to retire, and go out on their own terms. They gave them that, and for whatever reason, they chose not to do it.
So the team gave them something rarely given to training camp cuts: a press conference, in which they could address the fans.
