I agree that the situation wasn't great for Brink. He wasn't put in with a great chance of success. Poor game planning, injuries, poor protection - hard for the guy to look like a star. I thought he did decent personally, but I agree with the change. When Buck went down, the initial reaction from Bomber fans was "lets see what we have in these 2 (Brink/Elliott), the only wasy Elliott shouldn't have seen the field was if Brink was lights out, which he clearly wasn't.
AS far as his comments, I think he has a right to be pissed. Like someone else said, if the management is going to get pissed about players tweeting crap, it looks pretty bad when a player has to find out about a move like that from the media before hearing from the coach.
He also just hasn't seemed to fit in as well as Elliott. fans have always been more partial to Joey, and I think players have as well. There were a few plays from recent games where I've seen Brink knocked down, and no teammate there to help him up. One play in particular, he stuck his arm out after a play while he was on the ground, to a Montreal player who looked at him and walked away! I felt bad for Brink there. Add in the arguing with Edwards over route running, and the whole thing just doesn't look good.
You never know what's going to happen down the road though, and he may still get his chance again this year. But man, Brink if you want the job, you gotta step up and take it!
This certainly qualifies as being blindsided. IMO its a pretty classless move to announce changes such as this while players are on the practice field when players have not been informed. It should have been left to LaPo to address to the media after practice. If players are held accountable for what they put on Twitter, so should management.
Obviously Brink is PO'd he took over in the middle of a mess and it obviously affected his paly with injuries and players coming back from injuries etc.
Now that they are coming off a bye week and the lineup is healthy and ready to go Elliot gets the start. Unfortunely this is the right move and if Elliot came into the season as the number 2 it would most likely be Brink who would be getting the fresh start. Brink, however, needs to remeber he is still a very important part of the team as he does run the offense well and may be called upon again this season but with mostly eveyone back in the lineup and a fresh new 6 games to evaluate and play a fresh new QB is the right move. Elliot is 100% healthy and just as capable as Brink. Bring has to be a little banged up and the Bombers at this point just want the best and healthiest players in the starting lineup as they are still only 2 games out of first place in the east.
Hamilton better be ready on defense as Crowton finally has the best and healthiest players he has had to work with all season. Especially a Healthy #1 RB in Simpson for which the Bombers will be able to establish a ground game. Bad O line or not the O Line has been able to open holes for Simpson and he has ran with it very effectivily.
I like the Bombers at home in this one. Wahsingto will still need to start at corner so i would expect to see posibily Javon Johnson back for punts again and Wahington on KO with possibily new comer Will ford beside him. wahington will most likely be back for long field goal attempts and Johnson back for shorter ones using his experience to make the deceison to bring it out after a miss or conced the rouge
well, granted the secondary did not look great, but this was also his first start of the season, and first week of taking #1 reps. This does not neccessarily translate into a longterm trend of success, but it has to be at minimum applauded as a good outing and a positive sign for the Bombers and Joey.
Yes but Elliott beat them through the air, not on the ground.
And anyway 33 out of 43 is hardly “falling flat” nor a “disaster waiting to happen.”
It’s early, it’s only one game against a weak defence. … but at least man up and admit that your prediction was wrong, as I was fully prepared to do had it gone the other way.
yes, but it is also the same Cat’s defense that all other CFL QB’s have played against this season, and yet Elliott is the only one to have thrown for over 400yds against them.
Why not give credit where credit is due?
Elliott played an excellent game, and thinly veiled attempts to save face cannot subvert this fact.
As I said earlier, I’ll be the first to admit my take on Elliott was wrong if he turns into the next Travis Lulay. But one game of 400yds and a TD against the worst defence in the CFL hasn’t done anything to change my mind on him. Don’t forget, three weeks ago the Brink-mobile was rolling for 300yds in a win over Edmonton and the new franchise QB in Bomberland was named Al Brink. Enjoy the brief moment of euphoria in Winnipeg and celebrate Elliott for having the game of his life.
Look, you said he was going to fall flat and he didn't.
You said he was a disaster in the making, and he wasn't.
You were wrong. Plain and simple.
Don't take it too hard, I've been wrong lots of times. I'm the guy who predicted great things as CFL qbs for Rocky Butler, Marcus Brady, and Stanley Jackson, and we all know how that turned out (and if I ever forget, Mrs MadJack is quick on the draw to remind me).
But, based on one game, I was right about Elliott and you weren't.
Maybe next game it'll be the other way around. . . we shall see.
Unfortunately, a good number of poster's on this site are unable/unwilling to admit they were wrong. They would rather ramble on endlessly till everyone gives up trying to correct them.
Area, I'm wondering how you even drew the conclusion that Elliott would fall flat (a one-time event, presumably expected to occur in last night's game) and prove to be a disaster in the making (a long-term development). After all, he was winning his last start, against Calgary, until he got injured. What's your secret source of information, such as it is?
Of course one game doesn't "prove" anything; even Dinwiddie had one good one against Calgary. But based on what has actually been seen of Elliott in game time, what's behind your prediction? The fact that he plays in a Bomber uniform?
Anyway, I think Lapo was fair in giving Brink a few starts to show his stuff. Now, let's ride Elliott and see how he develops. I'm not at all sure that Buck should step back in as #1 the moment he gets back.
Valid question - - my opinion on Elliott is based on what I saw of him in college. He’s a bit of a riverboat gambler in that he’ll be agressive and not afraid to take some chances…sorta like a Brett Favre mentality, except with nothing close to Favre’s arm strength.
That’s a dangerous combination for the CFL - - as in dangerous to himself and his team rather than to the opposition. When you see all that open space on the wide side it’s tempting to think you can zip one out and get away with it. Elliott had a favourable match up last night as Hamilton gave him a lot of zone coverage, not to mention the TiCat secondary is not exactly a strong point of their team. Even then he was very fortunate not to have any INTs, including a couple that looked to be a pick six. Wait until teams start baiting him.
