Expect a dominant performance by the Argonauts Defence. Three and a half hours until kickoff at BMO Field in Toronto.
I feel bad for Edmonton fans. If they’d been able to close out that opening game against the Riders, this week’s game wouldn’t feel like a desperate must-win. But it’s hard to see how they prevail on the road against Toronto.
On the other hand, Winnipeg being 0-3 suddenly classes up the basement.
Can’t wait to see what happens tonight! Going to be a rainy game for sure.
Here are some game notes from the media package;
- This game will be the 103rd in their matchups played across 1961 to 2024 when CFL ‘interlocking’ play began. Edmonton leads 54 wins to 47 (1 tie) but Toronto holds a current 3-game win streak over the Elks. Edmonton’s most recent win in Toronto came on Nov 16/21 and they have won 2 of the last 3 meetings at BMO Field.
- 10 in a Row at Home: The Argos bring a 10-game home winning streak into this week - their longest since their club record streak of 17 straight home victories set in 1996-97
- Last year’s 2 Meetings: The Argos won the two games by margins of 23 and 12 points and in each one got out to a lead of at least 23 points.
- Macbeth Start #50: McLeod Bethel-Thompson returns to Toronto where he compiled a 24-23 record as a QB starter for the Argos (14-9 at home for Toronto). His 13,261 passing yards rank him #4 all-time on the Argos’ list. Bethel-Thompson’s updated career record is now 24-25 as he heads into career CFL start #50.
- 3 of the Top 11: The Elks have 3 very strong performers in their receive group with Kurleigh Gittens Jr (#9), Dillon Mitchell (#10) and Eugene Lewis at #11 through two weeks. In 2023, Edmonton had just one player in the CFL’s Top 19 receivers. Gittens leads the CFL with 16 receptions and has 21 targets in 2 games.
- Across the CFL - Containing Punt Returns: Last season there were 50 punt returns of 30+ yards. In 2024, there have been just 2 in the first 8/ games. That is a drop of 60% over last year.
- #1 vs #2 in Conversions: These two clubs have excelled at converting on 2nd down thus far. Toronto ranks#1 at 57.1% and the Elks are #2 at a 56.0% rate
- Across the CFL - Late Decisions: Of the 8 games played to date, 7 (87.5%) have gone down to the last 3:00 before being decided. Typically that means a game of 8 points or less at the 3:00 warning. I think this is now 8/10
As much as I want Toronto to win, I don’t think they will. People aren’t giving Edmonton their dues and their offense is going to shred our secondary. Would love to be proved wrong though.
Well I would be watching this on Pirate Sports Network but for the sinking of the Diablo Macho in the preseason as many of you know, and indeed that bojack from work did not last long after two rounds alone in a small dark room with Pirate Cat and he quit a week ago anyway.
Anyway, maybe we can sail properly for coverage tomorrow night, so tonight it’s Game Tracker for me.
If any of you, in the United States, are watching CBS Sports Network, please let us know on how it’s looking on your cable TV screen!
Is this one going to start on time? Possible Thunderstorms rolling through the GTA right now
I’m secretly hoping for a late start then.
I apologize to everybody in advance, but this time I have prudent reasons as noted above!
Well, what do you think is going on?
It sounds to me like the kick teams have practiced coverage quite well and the punters are not outkicking their coverage at least on the field plus better directional kicking is at hand. They probably studied our forum posts in the off-season too, but I digress.
The rest we know already, this is the CFL buster and no lead is safe, and we could use Rod Black on some of these summer nights for old time’s sake.
Also for another time, there is an important kicking trend report from south of the border for your analysis Dr. Goalposts.
This has got to be the answer
I’ll look into the kicker reports from the south tomorrow at work I have to lock in for the Argos.
We discussed the TSN 4k broadcasts last year. They were mostly in 4k but a few weren’t. This year only one game a week seems to be in 4k. That is tonight but even then the 4k channel was dark until exactly 6:00. Not even pre game. What gives? Is this some kind of extra expense TSN is cheaping out on?
Sportsnet has two 4k channels going 24/7 including all hockey. Does anyone know what the reasoning is here?
Well they got it off
Brutal. Long 2nd down situation now.
Good start !!
I don’t have the answers here, but I am hardly surprised and have heard about this happening here and there with other broadcasts and various TVs.
Like with most newer technology, I’m okay with HDTV on a modern TV until they figure it out.
Below is some random technical feedback for later or during any storm delay.
As you are a cable subscriber, it sounds perhaps like you are being cheated out of one taco on your favourite Tex-Mex platter by TSN so to speak, and well, that’s just not right.
I do agree with you that it should also be grounds for arrest for the commission of a crime against humanity, but let’s not get carried away tonight.
Or like we were talking about a few posts above, maybe TSN simply outkicked their coverage on those plays too.
How did MBT find Lewis lol
How about that now for skewing that punt return average already Dr. Goalposts?
The Elks are in scoring position for once. Don’t poop the bed this time MBT and Edmonton Mowing Crew!
Nice sack by Canadian Noah Curtis.
Nice catch by Mitchell!
TOUCHDOWN ELKS!
MBT lighting it up early. Mitchell beats Franklin for six. MBT isn’t suppose to make those deep throws.
Wow, the crowd paid for their whole seats, but after the Elks already brought the fire to town, now they’ll only need the EDGE!?
