MONTREAL — The Toronto Argonauts are headed to the 111th Grey Cup.
The Argos endured their most emotionally trying game of the season to outlast the Montreal Alouettes, downing them 30-28 to claim the Eastern Final victory in front of a sold out crowd at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.
To one and all Montreal Alouettes Football Club members., Thank you! (My cfl season is over, farewell till next 2025). Now _ onto the NFL, go Detroit Lions!
After seeing the final score I was coming on here to say ‘too bad’ as I wasn’t a fan of the controversial Kelly. Now it seems he went out injured, perhaps it won’t be an issue next week if he’s not good to play. Anyways, I would have still been going to the Bombers or Riders next weeks regardless of the East winner!
Montreal’s defensive strategy was brilliant and it should have won the game. But the Als shot themselves in the foot too many times, just like the Argos did in last year’s final. Great to see them back in the Cup. ArbuckleI filled in well and made a couple of clutch plays to keep the Argos alive and the ball away from the Als. I expect the Grey Cup to be competitive but I’m afraidwithout Kelly the Argos are doomed. The D will have play above their heads and I don’t see it happening but I’m wishing for a miracle.
Part 2: To win the Grey Cup, the Argo D will have to attack, attack and attack. Playing conservative will allow their opponent to chip away and chip away and pile up a lead in the expected absence of Argo scoring with Kelly gone. It looks to me like a leg fracture. Arbuckle has looked good late in the season. Maybe he has finally come in to his own. Good luck Argos.
Part 3: I’d like to see the Riders in the Cup as I am sick and tired of the Bombers. If the Argos can stop the Rider running game they have a chance. Ditto for the Bombers who should have an edge with Oliveira. I’ll be watching the west final and picking my banjo.
If Kelly cant play, it will be very similar to the 2007 Grey Cup game when the East Champion Bombers lost Kevin Glenn in the East Final. A young qb named Ryan Dinwiddie had his first start in the GC game. At least the Argos have 2 experienced back-up QBs.
I’m with you. I’m a rider fan so my opinion is obvious but the only people not sick of seeing Winnipeg in the grey cup is the Winnipeg fans. It’s been an impressive run but i would love to see their reign of terror come to an end.
While I am glad to see the Argos going to the Grey Cup, I was not expecting it. I have agree with BalmyBeacher that Kelly has a broken or fractured leg If that is case Dinwindie needs a new playbook for an Arbuckle-Dukes attack. I am with Lunchbox lets get someone new to the Cup. “Go Riders!”
ARRRRRGGGGOOOOSSSSS!!!
Gutsy win in front of “classless fans”
Regardless of how you feel about any individual player when he gets hurt, you still have to respect the fact that these players are out their working their butts off for our entertainment
Karma has come back to bite thise fans
Enjoy the game while you are watching the Argos on TV
Last year I predicted an Argo win unless they committed a bunch of turnovers. They did, and Montreal went to the Grey Cup. This year I predicted a Montreal win unless they committed a bunch of turnovers. They did, and Argos are going to the Grey Cup.
Montreal outplayed the Argos all day, but 4 fumbles when in scoring range??? Unbelievable. Just shows anything can happen.
The Grey Cup will be interesting. Argos squeaked by the Bombers twice this year, once with Kelly, once without.
I’ll go with the Bombers assuming Kelly can’t play, unless lightning strikes twice and the Bombers have a plague of turnovers.
I wonder why, in the 2nd quarter, Berglund was not called for a low hit on the quarterback (not the play when he fell on and likely broke Kelly’s leg), just like Miles Brown was called twice for this year. All of the plays were exactly the same, a pass rusher basically tackled by the offensive lineman and fell into the quarterback,
I can see how many could get tired of the Bombers in for a 5th straight time…but as I am a Bomber fan (as well as Lions and Stamps) I’ll be rooting for them to get their 3rd in this stretch. Maybe then they can take a break and we can see the Riders or Lions in next year’s Cup final (the Stamps not looking so good).
You know the Bombers are going to be pushing HARD next year to give themselves another West division title and the advantage that entails, as the Grey Cup is being held in Winnipeg. Given how few times the championship game has been held in the 'Peg (I attended the first, in 1991, where with a -20s wind chill, Rocket Ismail returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and the Argos never looked back), the mythical home Grey Cup win has eluded the Blue&Gold.
Who knows when the big game will come back to Winnipeg, or whether the city will have a team that can get there when it does? It’s the stuff dreams are made of, and it may also be the little bit of extra incentive that convinces some big names (like Dalton Schoen) to re-sign for another year, for the privilege of an opportunity that doesn’t come around often. It would also be quite something for the team to match the Eskimos record of 6 straight GC appearances (and while they can’t win 5 of them like Edmonton, 4 is still on the table).
