Argos coaching search

From all that I understand about Huff, he’s about as well respected as they come in CFL circles, unless I’m missing something from his past that I/we should know about…. But yes, I’m sure he doesn’t come cheap. This guy is not a nobody.

The Argos lost three people in the front office and have brought in exactly one guy in the twilight of his career to replace them, and he seems to be more an advisor than a hands-on football ops person. Explain to me how this isn’t more of the same cheapness and lazy attempt to paper over problems with optics?

Give your head a shake please. Huff and the word cheap are like oil and water. In my books. No optics on this one, in the least. It’s pure “we want to win more Grey Cups”. If you don’t see that, well, enough said.

Cute, but you didn’t actually answer the question. How is hiring one old guy to do the work of three younger departed people proof that Toronto isn’t trying to run football ops on the cheap?

“One old guy”? Stopped reading after that. You obviously don’t have a clue. Time to eat, I don’t have time for this crap.

He is definitely well respected. It sounds like he will be more of an overseer than a hands on guy, but should be an asset to the organization nevertheless. As it stands now Murphy should still be the de facto GM, but of course there could be more changes or additions yet to come. Hard to go wrong with this move.

You can’t actually answer my point, so you resort to ad hominem attacks. Nice work.

Hufnagel is 74 years old. So yes, objectively, he is old. If you think Huf on his own is going to be able to do the work of the multiple people who haven’t been replaced by Toronto over the past couple years, you are dreaming.

And again, three salaries to one salary? Looks like lazy cost-cutting papered over by a splashy big-name signing to reassure the fanbase.

Adding Hufnagel in a senior advisory capacity gives the whole organization instant credibility! Light now escapes that black hole.

Sorry, Argos don’t have much of a fanbase. This is to develop more of a fanbase. Quite a difference. And 74 isn’t that old. Heads of nation states can be much older than that with their hand on the red button.
Sometimes an attack is warranted, sorry but is what it is when is what it is is so obvious.

I don’t know for sure how well those three did their jobs. Based on how the team was run i surely can speculate. That team needs a rebuild from the top down and hiring Huff is a great start. He will know how to fill in the blanks.

Will add that MLSE has moved up one respectability point in my view.

Hey, it’s fair to be optimistic. But I honestly think the Argos are banking on the name recognition of Huf to do more than it should, given that he’s winding down his career. IF they hire a few good young people to fill out the front office, then I’ll be convinced they are serious about a rebuild. But if they expect a 74-year-old Hufnagel to work magic on his own – with a first-time CFL head coach who probably won’t have time to do the unpaid football ops work that Dinwiddie did – they are setting themselves up for failure.

If and i do say if, the Argos do follow his advice that he does know how to build a winner. If he is hamstrung by a cheap hierarchy then i expect the same old.

I think John will have a lot of influence in the football ops since he’s been a proven winner.

If the hierarchy is cheap they wouldn’t spend enough to get him to leave the Stamps.

Hierarchy meaning coaching staff and GM for the most part I would assume you mean?

Best guy in the CFL .
Moving on from whence he came . How does this bode for his former team he oversaw for how long.

League sets the max OP cap. Who sets and controls the teams actual OP budget?

He has an official title now

Not sure of the job description but welcome on board Mr. Hufnagel

Good interview by John Hodge with new Argo Head Coach Mike Miller. I can see why players would want to play for him. Its my belief that most Coaches at this level can pick out a college player who can or should be able to play in the League. But then there are your Wally Bouno’s and Don Mathews who seem to be a step above most other Coaches in that department as they win where ever they go. We often here the words about some player or coach that they are God gifted, like a Bobby Orr in hockey or a Tom Brady in football. IMO that what sets some players or coaches apart. So hopefully for the Argos sake Mike Miller has some of those qualities in finding talented players and assistant coaches. One question I would have liked John Hodge to ask Mike, was how well he knows John Hufnagel and what does he expect Huffs in put will be in player personal etc. Which I guess brings up another question, who has the final word on the roster. It seems to have been a problem for Ryan Dinwiddie.

As the Argos coaching search is over I will close this thread.
