"It’s depressing in a way,? Philipp, 54, said. “The players seem to have less energy. It’s depressing when the PA announcer yells, ‘Argos,’ and the fans yell back, ‘Suck,’ louder.?
Trying to sell tickets last minute when the Jays are playing in the seventh game is not an easy job.
No matter how hard TSN tried not to show the empty stands, it looked really, really bad on TV too.
Haha, Awesome The Argos playing at Hamilton’s stadium is like the Red Sox playing a home game in Yankee stadium or the Montreal Canadiens playing in the Leafs home arena. It’s just not right.
I think the league needs to revisit the rules. If you can’t play in your home stadium, the opponent should have first right of refusal to host the game.
Seems reasonable to me. Then the stands would be mostly full, have an engaged crowd, and give the ‘visitors’ a small part of the gate to smooth things over.
For other people, the percentages may vary. Obviously, I blame the Rogers Centre for being unable to convert from baseball to football in 2 days and (potentially) converting back to baseball in 3 days. They also get blame for not being able to give the Argos a respectable schedule the past 4 years (I’m sorry, Tuesday games don’t cut it).
The Argos organization were dealt some lemons, and they could have handled this better. E.g. setting up a bus from Toronto to Hamilton. Or doing an advertising campaign saying “Good luck Jays … we won’t stand in your way to the championship” to try and get Toronto fans to sympathize with their cause.
Local football fans should have taken up the mantle, and bought the very inexpensive tickets (or taken advantage of the many freebies) and come to the game. I sat beside a Hamilton family where this was there first football game. I also sat near people who travelled 3 hours from Scarborough (rush hour traffic is FUN) to attend the game. The weather was great – a little chilly, but no wind.
I am not sure what the CFL could have done differently, but rightly or wrongly, it looks bad on them as an organization. (which is another reason why I would have liked local CFL fans to have come out to support the league).
Argo fans have been to Hamilton before. They have been subjected to insults, beer poured on them and worse. We have not been good hosts in the past. While this game was different, I’ve talked to many Argos fans who don’t like to come to Hamilton for that very reason. This game was on a Friday night. Which means you need to navigate more than one 400-series highway during rush hour to get to the game. Oh, and there was a Jays game on. Lots of excuses not to go. But the die hards should have made the trip. I’m sure a few did.
I get that there are those in Hamilton who hate the Argonauts organization so much that they cannot even say their name. But I think that percentage is small. Most of us are football fans first. And we enjoy a night out at Tim Hortons field.
Although I admit the game experience was – weird. I’m glad I went.
The Argos wish to show their appreciation to Bob Young, the Tiger-Cats and their fans for the use of Tomb Hortons Field at this time of need.
To demonstrate their gratitude, the Argos plugged all the locker room toilets before they left. It seemed like the appropriate tribute based on the circumstances.
The Argos would like to especially thank Big Jim Barker, premier defensive end Ricky Foley and Argo good friend and colleague and future Hall of Famer defensive tackle Adriano Belli for their generous and sizeable donations to this cause.
Thank you and Happy Plunging,
Your friends the Argos...
Let’s face it, it was always difficult to schedule 9 football games around 81 baseball games and when the Jays made the playoffs there was the potential of 9 more baseball games.
Time to forget about the Rogers Centre, after the last game against the Bombers it will be the final CFL game there. They won’t even play a Grey Cup game there in the future.
I still find it kind of strange that the people that complained the most about the RC being the worst place to watch a CFL game and made that as the excuse as to why attendance was low, all of a sudden were complaining that the Argos had lost their home and how unfair it was…
How many of the Argo Rogers Centre haters showed up at THF to support their Argos??
At least at BMO Field the Argos will have to schedule 9 games around 20 TFC games and TFC would have already played around 6 or 7 home games before the CFL season starts. If TFC plays every other week and the Argos every other week they shouldn’t have any conflicts.
