Are the defensive schemes more complicated this year?

Ok, listening to Darren Flutie say on this play it was a "basic cover 2" and then the next play "a more robust cover 2" etc., just using language here, are the defenses in the CFL now more complicated than in the past? I don't know, it seems that broadcasters like Flutie are talking more about all these different defensive schemes like I've never heard before.
Can anyone help out here?

I remember when it was "I got him, you take him!"

So can I ro! I can see sometimes why people who have never watched football say it is a very complicated game.

I don't think defences have gotten more complicated. It's just that the announcers are talking about defensive formations more frequently and using more technical language. Chris Jones (Mtl) and Rich Stubler (Tor) have been using very complex schemes for years.

Cover 2 is a basic defensive formation in football where two backs play deep as 'safeties' and the remaining DBs and linebackers play the 'underneath' part of the field in fifths (without the safety) or sixths (with the safety). In Cover 2, obviously it's primarily zone coverage, because defenders play sections of the field instead of specific receivers. However, the underneath defenders must also be ready to play man coverage based on the routes receivers run (called 'pattern reading').

What I would imagine a 'robust Cover 2' means is that the sixth defender (probably either the safety or a halfback) isn't actually assigned to zone coverage underneath, but is actually a zone-straddling 'rover' of sorts who can drop back to assist the deep safeties or help out underneath according to his read of the opposing offense's play and their receiver routes. So it's Cover 2, because there are still only two safeties playing deep, but it's slightly more robust because there is potentially a third cover man in the deep field, and it's not officially Cover 3 because that third cover man isn't necessarily going to be playing deep on any given play.

Interesting, thanks discipline.

You mean they don’t do that anymore?

Thats the way we played back in school…along with leather helmets!

To funny sportsmen..I'll cover the fat guy, just doesn't work in todays game..

Are how about. Receiver run right towards the telephone pole, slotback cut left towards the garbage can...

On two...

Break

I remmember.

Ok the bottle cap is Fred. John your the pebble.....

You cheater! You’ve been listening in my huddle!

I think the defences have been this complicated for the last 10-15 years. The fans are finally catching up and are starting to care about what schemes they are running.

I was quite pleased the other week when i had a very intelligent debate on running an effect 3-4 defence in the CFL and what sort of personal you would require to be successful. Normally I would be forced to have these type of conversations with NFL fans.

If I have enough bottle caps and pebbles, I can discuss any topic with anybody!

Heather and Bill, you will be the decoys. Just run as fast as you can towards the school and yell, "I'm Open!" I can see they have a deep cover 2 on so that should take care of the whole defence. I'll pass to Mikey. Hmmm too bad his legs are so short!

....Eddie....you go long....Al...drop off short....and the rest of you guys block ...alright (handclap) on 3 ....hup 1 ...hup ...2 ...smack .... alright who missed the block..someone was supposed to pick up that BIG guy...... crap ,those guys were off-side man....does that ever bring it all back....lol lol :rockin: :rockin:

In answer to original questyion, "No."

It's because many of the offences are crapola

I read somewhere that the average points per game is down this year from last, so I say something is up, maybe the defences are just ahead of the offensives at this point in the season.

Pigseye, I think you are right. When teams make major reworks with the players or coaches, it always seems the defence develops faster. That appears to have been the case here this year. Gather that some offences can get complicated. Something like a pre-nup.

It's like a push pull thing, been going on ever since I can remember, but what I do recall, our last two GreyCup winning teams, had a defence that ruled the world...Go Bomers..

ok, sporty, run and hind by the mail box and move thowands the street light on 1st after I throw it. Ro, get on the bus, take it to third street, I'll fake it to you!

Fat kid: WHAT ABOUT ME???

KK: YOU GO LONG!
