Alouettes' new uniforms and logo

Well I'm a bit late getting around to this, but anyhow ........

Due to visual confusion because of very similar uniforms watching July 13's Als-Redblacks game, searched the web for info on Als' uniform and logo changes. Saw an awful lot of b.s., e.g., some guy at 3DownNation actually saying what they have now is the first logo change since 2000. WHAT?!! Obviously he was elsewhere (Jupiter?) last season.

Last year management seemed to think the solution to the losing problem was to change the logo every few weeks, as if that would have solved their problems on the field.

for a history of alouette logos, see:

In my humble opinion the new logo is great - got the lark/alouette (sort of) and the M for Mtl. all in one. Let's hope they keep it that way.

But as I said I have a problem with the uniforms after watching last July 13's game against the Redblacks. Please bear in mind that the Als new blue is a very dark navy blue, so it looks very close to black. So both the Als and the Redblacks have black/ish helmets. Both teams have red socks. The only difference is one team was wearing white pants and very dark jerseys and the other was wearing very dark pants and white jerseys. It was not easy trying to figure out what was going on on the field. I shouldn't have to go, "Oh, he's got white pants, yeah, and the other guy doesn't; now which team is white pants and vice versa?" If the Als had picked something close to a royal blue that wouldn't have happened.

At least if they're going to have these uniforms - and both teams do, I believe, have variations in both jerseys and pants in their respective wardrobes - let one wear all white and the other all dark. Otherwise it's crazy to try to watch. Maybe the Als should have kept the same uniforms as last year

  • just changed to the new logo.

[Personally, having grown up on the '50s Als at good ol' Molson Stadium, I miss the red and white. Yep, just red and white. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that and no other CFL team looks like that. Think of the Detroit Red Wings. Four Stanley Cups from 1997-2008 in the same red and white uniforms they had in the '50s? (Much as I like the new logo, I would even be happy, thinking just red and white, if they had the same larks' wings on the helmets as they did back in the day.)
P.S. Though a born and raised Montrealer, I must confess a fondness for the Riders green and white. They even tried to mess with that a couple of years ago, switching to black pants. Yuk! Keep it simple! The Riders are defined by that beautiful green. And B.C. looked much better back when they last won the Grey Cup. The new orange is UGLY.]

Yeah, you are:

Huh?! How would that be a problem? One glance at the start of the game should suffice.

No, no, no, a thousand times no! I hate that uni-colour look. The players look like they're wearing pajamas. And many/most fans agree. In fact there's a dedicated thread on the Argos forum on precisely that topic:
Maybe the Als should have kept the same uniforms as last year - just changed to the new logo.
I don't think either needed to be changed.

That was indeed a very good look!

Well all I can do is invite readers to watch the recap of that game, if they didn’t see it at the time, and decide for themselves. And so what if it’s late - I don’t know why I even mentioned that: the issue is still valid for future games between these teams.

New uniform supplier was/is revamping all the uniforms and the Als were the guinea pig … they embraced the opportunity because they needed to revamp their “brand” because (all their own fault) the team was losing fans.

I loved the old unis, so I’ve had a hard time getting on board with the new ones. The colors are OK, but man, that helmet logo … as one of our members said in the Als forum, looks like they gave a drunk a crayon and told him to draw as straight as he could. Looks fugly on TV.

Okay:

I still don’t see a problem. The Als are in the white jerseys; the RedBlacks in black.

Well on that point we agree. The recent Lions’ uniform that I liked the best was the simple straightforward orange one they wore in mid-decade:

Yeah. OK

They didn’t change logos last year…they simply brought back olders ones…you know retro?

You would think a fan from the 1950’s would know that.

As for problems on the field…what does a logo change have to do with it?..You think its was the HC or GM who figured a new look would mean more wins? (even though they have been winning with the new current logo)

Why do you have to remind yourself who has the white pants, but would not have to remind yourself who has the royal blue?

Worse yet the new logo is simply boring.

Simple star and it translates .

Kid with the crayon is actually want they want for marketing .

Something unique yet a kid could doodle it on a notebook .

Growing up I use to just draw the double E back then I was a esks fan .

Indeed!

Well then the Alouettes should revert to their Angry Bird logo since it was far-and-away their winningest of all-time!

Vast differences. Drunk with a crayon means the logo looks wobbly and unprofessional on TV. Very different from the Steelers and EE logos, both of which are sharply defined and also blocked by color.

The Als’ helmet logo is straggly red without any block color inside. It really does look like someone was given a crayon after a few drinks.

At first I didn’t like it on top of the helmet but it’s grown on me the team has over achieved and the team has been a feel good story so far .

Maybe if it was better positioned on the helmet and with a better outline maybe in white it might give a better look as most people don’t look at helmets from above but I understand why they did it and it maybe too ambitious .

It is unique and the logo is better for merchandising and marketing than the crazy wood pecker cartoon .

The logo Reminds me of Michigan Wolverines helmet or Carleton Ravens helmet . It’s just a more mature stronger look than the cartoon bird .

Again a matter of opinion.

Bring back the “ crazy wood or pecker cartoon? over the dull crayon attempt of a logo poorly placed on top of the helmet.

You would be taking a step back unless your marketing to kids alone .

I like the new look. The logo is minimalist but cleverly designed. It conveys much without ostentation. I don’t find it looks scraggly or boring at all.

I agree, though, that the placement of the dark red outline on the dark blue helmet doesn’t work. It makes the logo all but invisible from a distance. I’d like to see the same design but with the logo filled in white. Or have a white outline with the dark red fill inside.

Based on?

And I guess I am kid then.
One who would much rather the “cartoon” logo as you call it vs the unimaginative red colored crayon one that sits on top of the helmet.

Nothing wrong with being a kid ;)I want the DQ sundae helmet back big time .

In terms of basing my opinion on is other team sports branding and a bit of marketing knowledge .

Other teams like the Toronto Raptors getting rid of Barney the dinosaur is an example.

They went from this .

To this .

The simple defined look is in right now . Brands want simple bold look .

I would have hated it if Ottawa used a lumber jack as the logo . Joe is great for kids but just too much going on for branding .

Now I agree with you on the DQ helmet !
