MONTREAL β Montreal Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia announced on Saturday that Jason Maas has been named the 27th head coach in team history.
Not a shocker to anyone who had been following the team. Maas wouldn't have been my first choice, but he was definitely the best of the candidates. He's got HC and OC experience. He's won a Grey Cup. We could have done a lot worse.
Was being sarcastic - this has been in the works for a long time. Harris & Maas have, by all accounts, had a great working relationship & it would be a "shocker" if Harris doesn't re-sign with the Als.
I was saying in the Als forum yesterday that on paper, Maas is the best HC hire we've made since Trestman. He's certainly better than:
Dan F. Hawkins
Tom "I could play Trestman's body double in a biopic but I have none of his football IQ" Higgins
Jacques Chapdelaine
Jim Popp, Fake Head Coach
Kavis Reed
Mike Sherman
Khari Jones
So would Maas have been my choice in a perfect world? Probably not. I'd have preferred Trestman, Bob Dyce, Scott Milanovich, Maksyvic, or Monson. But of the candidates in consideration, Maas was the best choice.
Maas and the offence didnβt stand a chance in Regina with that oline last year. Heβll be a better coach for Montreal than Macioccia or Khari. Just needs to dial back those occasional fits of rage.
A poor choice. He could be, maybe, a good High Scholl coach, what with all his yelling and emotional outburst. He screwed things up in Edmonton, did nothing of note in Regina and got hired because he and Macioca have a sort of Edmonton link.
