After all Canadians eventually crapped out at the US Open, as expected canada won their Davis Cup match against Israel to move on in Halifax amidst protests, tight security and no fans allowed.
And Taylor Townsend continues to step in it. After getting into it with Ostapenko at the Open, where she appeared to be unfairly attacked by her opponent and referred to as trailer trash and uneducated, she did little to debunk those allegations with her latest comments, although I donât think that a woke apology was necessary. Chinese food also happens to be my favourite food.
In the first high ranking tournament since the US Open, Felix and Diallo doing well. Shapovolov eliminated by an unseeded player.
Glad to see my cousin Mike Tevlin and his wife Nicole doing doing some great stuff with tennis in Canada and with womens equity issues. They are both committed to the sport of tennis in Canada but especially to see that women have equity with men within the sport. Could not agree more cousin Mike!:
The Saudi Investment Fund that pays for the LIV golf tour is also very active in tennis and there is a 6 person tourny that pays $6 million to the winner of as little as two matches. LIV like money. I had not been aware of this.
This is something we will have to get used to if we havenât already. The Saudis already have a significant presence in tennis and Formula 1 and golf and in fact are the sole reason there is still a European womenâs tour. They also have invested in the NFL to a small extent and the NBA and NHL. Saudi money invested in Bell pays for a protion of the current CFL TV contract so all CFL clubs receive Saudi money as well.
I guess there was some controversy way back in 1978 about this $1.1 billion contract Bell Canada had with Saudi Arabia and human rights concerns at the time. No idea as to the real basis of this though and whether it was just political grandstanding of one sort or another.
Yeah we went through this all in the LIV thread and it isnât my intention to do so again. The Saudis are just a reality in sports and itâs growing. Itâs better to try and change them from within than from the outside and in any event, professional sports are all about money and that isnât going to change.
I think the CFL might want to think of getting in on this with the NFL if they possibly can in any way:
Excellent week for Canadian tennis, congrats to both:
More good news for Canadian tennis. Felix winning in paris and on to the semis, keeping his hopes to make the top 8 that play in the ATP Finals alive.
Also Leylah and Victoria keep wining and are seeded #2 and #3 respectively and will play each other in the semis with the #1 seed already eliminated.
Well Victoria defeated Leylah in the semis and then won the tournament. Her first success and good play since she won in Canada. Her wrist injury has apparently fully healed.
Felix lost to cheater Sinner in the Finals and had to withdraw for next week due to injury. Making the final put him into 8th spot for the year and the ATP finals for the top 8. Thatâs like the tennis Tour Championship. He can still be knocked out by Mussetti though if the latter wins this week. Lots of prestige and cash at stake.
