Just starting a new annual category as the Australian Open starts soon. Hopefully Canadian players will do a little better this year.
The Aaron Rodgers of tennis feeling hard done by.
Something going right for a Canadian in a tennis tournament for once:
Preview of the Australian Open and the draws which starts Sunday:
As a follow up Felix wins the warm up tournament to the Aussie Open. Congrats. The tourny didn’t include some top players, but it wasn’t a bad field and I believe Felix was seeded 5th and he beat the numer 1 and 2 seeds his last two matches. In good form heading into the season’s first major.
Early results good for Felix and Leylah:
Two more Canadians win. One loses.
Had a great time watching Leylah come back to win her second round match late last night. It was also great to watch as it was on TSN 1 with no commentators and with some Australian commercials. It appeared to be some kind of direct Australian feed. I guess they don’t have commentators for all of the early matches.
Unfortunately next up for her is #3 seed Coco Gauff.
Unfortunately after showing some form by winning the tournament last week. Felix went nowhere this week.
More from the opaque goings on surrounding Swiatek’s suspension. Currently Sinner, who was actually caught twice remains unsanctioned, although his lack of punishment is under appeal.
Looks like we are down to one player in doubles at the AO. Otherwise some great tennis being played.
Kudos to Gabby Dabrowski as she’s the only Canuck still kickin’ around in the Aussie Open. (love the Aussie black licorice btw).
but the MAJOR UPSET, perhaps in a couple years occurred last nite on Centre Court as the recently hobbled Spanish Super Model, Paula Badosa took the air out of the presumptive #2 player in women’s tennis - Coco Gauff - - - in straight sets, yet!
Badosa dissected a super fit, big & powerful women, imposing her will and powerful cross court shots. At the end Gauff reverted to a hopeless and hapless prior self.
First time the Spanish fashion model (don’t let her looks take away from her athletic skills) has been in a majors semi-final.
Work cut out - she’ll be taking on the only current women who’s actually bigger (6’0" to Badosa’s 5’11") and stronger Russian star Aryana Sabalenka. I think the major step for Badosa was advancing to the semis. Sabalenka is a different kettle of fish.
If Badosa can take a set from Sabalenka (her best friend on tour btw) I think thats the optimal outcome for the snazzy Spaniard.
Both ladies are fun to watch.
And Boo Jokevic beats Alcaraz.
Going on 38 yr old Joker took apart his young, game and talented successor Alacatraz in 4 sets, yes. Joker demonstrating that the “old guys” still have some kick in their game, stunning Alacaz. I suspect Joker might play thru his 38th year - replete with his assortment of “fake injuries” which always give hope to his higher-ranked opponents until they realize Joker was sand-bagging them all along. Great strategy from Joker - it ain’t illegal is it?
A decent upset in the semis. keys has been playing geat all tournament. I saw part of her dominant opening match. here’s hoping she beats Aryna Putin.
Last Canadian is finito but at least made the semi finals:
Jokevic gets booed, perhaps unfairly. Having said that I have no problem with the Aaron Rodgers of tennis getting booed. I also wouldn’t object to Captain Lunatic being deported from Australia again:
A recap of the Aussie Open finals. Sinner hammers Zverev. A potential drug cheat vs an accused spousal abuser. I’m sure the Aussies would have loved a different final match up.
And an unexpected yet welcome victory by Madison Keys over Sabalenka. No word yet as to whether Putin will be seeking to poison Keys.
Felix wins another tournament, although not a strong field was entered.
Leylah through to the quarter finals. Felix retired with an injury in his first round match.
And of all people, Shapovolov wins a tournament, beating several higher seeded players.
Jokevic making some sense for once. At least Sinner got something, but the way tennis handles doping infractions is a mess.
