Canada still rolling at Davis Cup.
Canada advanced to the Final 8 quarterfinals as they should given the quality depth of their players.
Next up is the QF against either Germany or Netherlands. I like their chances with Netherlands a while lot more. For some reason our top 2 struggle consistently with Sacha Zverev, Jan Lennard-Struff, and Dom Koepfer for some peculiar reason.
If they advance past the QF, then Spain’s super powered force awaits with 6 players well within the top 100 including none other than Carlos Alcaraz.
Quality of depth players matters a lot in this tourney as one lone superstar will rarely carry the day based on the format.
Looks like Canada is set to play Germany in the Davis Cup QF. Doesn’t look great for them. Maybe they can play some inspired tennis during this time.
As for Billie Jean King Cup, Canada will have a tossup on their hands against the winner of Germany/Great Britain, with the next round to meet Australia/US.
This tournament might get a lot easier for the Canadians depending on how many of the players participating in the WTA Finals opt out such as Swiatek, Navarro, Gauff, Krejcikova. Likely Pegula, Paolini, and Collins will opt out as well.
Canada’s lineup for the Davis Cup quarterfinals to be played in November.
Watch the latest tirade from Tiafie, a spoiled brat, diva type. Hate to see this selfish nonsense, especially when it took all the wind out of the sails of his much lower ranked opponent.
A sports legend officially hangs them up.
Canada’s Diallo just had the best week of his career, making it to the final and beating several higher ranked players. He will make the top 100 for the first time ever. He had been playing well recently and is a beast at 6 ft 8 in. Perhaps he will turn out to be Canada’s first great men’s player?
I had forgotten that Felix was the two time defending champion this week in Switzerland and that he won 4 tournaments two years ago. He is a long way from that form now, but hopefully he can get it together in a very positive place to play for him.
Of recent Felix AA has been Canada’s best - and he’s not that great. Looks great for one set, then sags. El Shapo has his moments but he’ll never be a Top 10 player, prolly a Top 40-50 for the duration of his tour career. Milos Raonic, the awkward giant was Top 10 and reached at least one big tour final but he’s a broke down hobo at this point, falling apart at the seams.
The great Canadian mens doubles players are definitely Top 10 doubles, but really don’t cut the mustard for men’s only.
Dilallo is the next great north hope.
Womens - even though Cranky won a major title, she’s faded badly with injuries, mood swings and bad nerves. Fernandez has been consistent - she’s a great little player, emphasis on little & under-powered. She’ll no doubt get to another major quarter-final but thats about the end of the road when so many monsters now lurk - ie. Sabalenka, Muchova, Badosa, Swiatek, Pegula, Coco, etc.
THere’s a new Canadian lady entering the fray - she seems promising but not enough road map to make predictions.
Genie Bouchard has fallen thru the safety net and she’s now operating as a poorly-rated novelty act. Half Model - half Tennis Racket.
Professional Pickleball player.
In her heyday Maria was by far the richest earning female athlete in the world and may still be. I have seen her as a guiest shark on Shark Tank.
Not a top level tournament but Leylah playing well and on to the semi-finals.
Canada and Leylah looking to defend their title at the Billie Jean King Cup. Bianca withdrew after playing a couple of tournaments for another period of “rest” of unknown determination. Too bad her talent couldn’t be combined with Leylah’s grit and determination and mental focus. Canada would then have a perennial top 5 player.
So much for Canada at the Davis Cup. Not a big fan of the excuse given by Felix for being absent as he was off doing “charity work”.
Iga Swiatek gets suspended for a month for inadvertently taking a banned substance. No idea why Jannik Sinner, who was at least as cuplable as Swiatek, got off scott free.
As I was saying yesterday, Halep has a point about uneven treatment. At least the lack of penalty for Sinner, whom Shapovolov called out is being appealed.
Unsurprisingly Sabalenka wins player of the year. She had a tough year with her boyfriend offing himself, but not nearly as tough as the Ukranians her country is still trying to kill daily.
