VANCOUVER — The BC Lions are keeping one of their top defensive players in house.
The Leos checked off a key item from the holiday shopping list as National defensive lineman Mathieu Betts has signed a two-year extension with the team. Betts was eligible to become a free agent this February and was the ninth ranked player on CFL.ca’s Top 30 pending free agents list.
Coaches with other teams are under contract until the end of the year. It was noted that some teams won’t announce (ie. they’re not “officially” signed to new teams) until the New Year. This may hearken back to when Chris Jones signed with the Riders along with almost all of the assistants in December 2016. Hervey then said, upon the announcement of the signings, he wouldn’t pay them for the balance of the year on their existing contracts. Apparently there are still some of these “games” being played according to media sources - so I’ve heard.
One question I have is how are the Lions going to be able to be financially competitive in the FA market when they have the highest paid QB and the highest paid defensive lineman in the league and I think by quite a margin? Do they have anything left to retain players like McInnis who should be worth a premium?
Lions will be okay with their coaching staff, they’re bound to hire people with a prerequisite professional football background unlike the skrs who plucked a local off the street of regina with no professional football credentials. A guy, last name donnelly hired as assistant offensive coordinator, can you say nepotism! Wow is not a accurate description of how they run that so called professional cfl franchise over in regina, very amateurish. The cfl should institute rules against such hires, after all it’s supposed to be a professional football league.
