TSN is promoting the CFL by carrying hours upon hours of games, just in that fact alone. Michael Vick, whether you like him or despise him, is big news in the football business with him signing with a team. This is also good for the CFL in some ways since they are talking football and not baseball, it's all good.
Do you really think TSN doesn't want to promote the CFL with all the money they have put into carrying all the games? Get real. But they have to cover other stuff going on people since a lot of people are interested in this. This more to the sports world than the CFL and while I would like more CFL news all the time on all networks, the networks have to cover other sports that also sell. TSN carries NFL football, they have to promote this, and baseball, and basketball (they carry Raps games I think).
You just finished watching the game - what do you need to see the highlights 2 seconds later for? TSN is doing a grade A job and if you continued to watch I'm sure there was commentary from the panel later in Sportscentre - there usually is. I can't believe the heat that TSN takes in this forum for perceived biases or slights - it is not the CFL network but the SPORTS network.
Some recognized sports of the IOC are chess and bridge! They may be in the olympics some day too. I don’t see how this gives any credibility to golf as a sport - sorry. There are also a lot of other “sports” in both olympics that I question, and if golf becomes included, then I question that too. I agree with the person who said golf is a recreation, not a sport. Not unlike hiking or hunting.
I agree inclusion doesn’t make it a sport, but like someone else already pointed out- try walking 6000 yds and concentrate on hitting a ball into a little cup and see if you don’t work up a sweat- most people take up golf for a bit of exercise- namely walking. You don’t have to be fit to take up golf, but it helps…
omg what a bunch of crybabies.!!!.. :thdn: :thdn: :thdn: :thdn: :thdn: :thdn: :thdn: … you guys should be ashamed of youre selves … tsn rocks!!! :rockin: :rockin: :rockin:
I live in suburban Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Eagles played the New England Patriots in the first preseason game (organized scrimage) of the 2009 season last night (score was New England 27-25 over the Eagles, not that it matters), but when the Eagles signed Michael Vick the stadium was abuzz about that, much moreso than the boring preseason game being played in front of them. The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a quick poll about the signing and the results were 58% against and 42% for the signing. People are in shock about this here and keep asking why do this, even though most feel he should get another chance to continue his football career because he's paid his debt to society, but just not here. This makes it a huge story because the Eagles were NEVER mentioned as even thinking of signing him
Tiger Woods is the most recognizable and dominant athlete in his sport at the current time, and him leading a major championship after the first round makes it news also. Therefore both of these things become important sports news, but in Canada I'm not sure that makes them more important than a truly outstanding CFL game between Calgary and Edmonton that went right down to the wire, especially between two long time rivals, also from the same Province. Someone had to make a determination as to what to lead the broadcast off with, and even though I'm not a Canadian, in my opinion I'm not sure the correct decision was made, but it's over and can't be changed.
And take away that it was an entertaining game. It was still just a regular season game. Someone mentioned before that these shows are as close to live as they can be. I don’t know if they have time to prioritize these things based on perceived quality. In other words, they can’t assume it will be great, give it top priority on that basis, then try to move it down if it turned out to be brutally bad. They have enough balls to juggle.
I wish there was a way for ONLY those who constantly complain about TSN’s coverage to see what things would be like without it. Kind of an “alternate reality” thing. I think they’d want to come back to “our” reality awful quickly.
Well, how about this: for that dufus who wants the CFL back on CBC, you would not have seen last nights game, because CBC wouldn't be broadcasting games for another 3 weeks.
Instead, you'd have had to spend three hours enthralled with a documentary on the history of yarn, and a re-run of David Suzuki explaining why global cooling is going to plunge humanity back into an ice age by 2020.
Just because TSN provides excellent coverage of the games does not make them beyond criticism.
Yesterday and as this thread suggests is a perfect example like some of us have said.
Hey when USAspikes from Phillie can agree and he is American, than it's hard to argue against.
TSN has made many a blunder and they will not get a free pass from me or others.
Need I remind some and to me this is probably up near the top, treating the Grey Cup as second class by not broadcasting over on the CTV network while the No Fun League gets their top billing.
The fact of the matter is too that Michael Vick’s story goes beyond just his sport. People who don’t watch football specifically are still aware of it. Cripes, even though they don’t apply to watching TSN, people who don’t watch SPORTS are aware of it.
A mid-season CFL regular season game does not beyond its established fan base. Only people who watch the CFL care. That’s why Vick gets priority (like it or not, which i don’t, but I can at least see TSN’s stance).
It’s an American story only period.
No one outside their border cares, save and except the wannabes here and those that might care about the NFL.
Still though and under any circumstance this non story should not trump the game of the year or any CFL game just ending.
Not even the recreational golf.
I agree that they are not beyond criticism, but since overall they do a pretty thorough job, the criticism seems unwarranted.
Think of it this way; pretend you’re a receiver. You just had ten catches in a game for 190 yards and three scores. Then a fan comes up to you after the game and says “How the hell could you drop that pass in the second quarter?? It hit you right in the numbers??!!”
Sure, your good game does not put you beyond criticism. But for crying out loud, when the rest of the package is so good it seems like small stuff to complain about.
Including pre-game and what not, how much time did TSN devote to the CFL last night? But they embarassed themselves by not using up the first 5-10 minutes of Sportcenter too? Come on, man, cut 'em a little slack…
OK by your analogy, let’s say that one pass your receiver dropped was instead a fourth potential TD that could have but did not win the game.
Either way your version or mine, he is a bum for the week until the next game when he must redeem himself.
I think overall we agree how an excellent job is being done by TSN to broadcast the games and promote the league.
But at the same token it is not overally critical when they really put their foot in their mouth at the expense of the second most popular sport in Canada and for which they are making a boatload of cash for a property which is grossly undervalued. But that’s another story and previous threads discussed adnauseam.
The reason I don’t use an example as extreme as yours is because the impact is not at all the same.
If TSN’s coverage had cut out the last few plays of the best game of the season (so far), sure. But they did not ruin the game itself, as my game-dropper would have (for my team). So yes, in that situation someone would be far more justified in critisizing me.
The segment of time you’re angry about is minimal compared to how time they did give the league. You’re complaining about not being able to see the same plays you just saw at some point in the previous three and half hours only minutes from the time the game ended. God Lord, man…
As stated before, TSN is a Sports Network. Other sports have to be given their time too. You just had hours of CFL. TSN has to think about its viewers that DON’T watch the CFL too.
