Hawks skipper facing three
Monday 22 May 2006
Paul Gough
Sportal for afl.com.au
Hawthorn, already reeling from three successive losses, is now facing the prospect of being without its captain Richard Vandenberg for an extended period after he was hit with a three match suspension from the AFL match review panel on Monday.

And the news was also bad for struggling Essendon with both Andrew Lovett and Dean Solomon offered suspensions from the panel in a further blow to the last-placed Bombers.

Vandenberg was charged with a level four striking offence on Melbourne's Russell Robertson during Friday night's game at the MCG but because of his previous record his penalty cannot be reduced to under a three match ban.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct, low impact, behind play and high contact equating to 325 points and a three-match suspension.

But because of his six match suspension for striking against Essendon in the infamous 'line in the sand' game in 2004, Vandenberg's penalty was increased by 50 percent to 487.5 points and a four-game suspension.

If he decides to challenge the panel's decision at the tribunal on Tuesday night, that is the penalty Vandenberg will be risking but by pleading guilty his penalty would drop by 25 percent to 365.63 points and he would serve only a three match ban.

The panel also reviewed contact between Robertson and Vandenberg but that was deemed to be neglible and no further action was required.

Vandenberg's teammate Chance Bateman was also charged with engaging in rough conduct against Melbourne's Aaron Davey but he can accept a reprimand and 56.25 points towards his future record with an early plea.

And the Hawks are also sweating over the availability of exciting big man Lance Franklin, who was reported for charging in the VFL.
Lovett was offered a two match suspension after being charged with striking West Coast's Adam Hunter.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct, low impact, behind play and high contact - equating to 325 points and a three match suspension but if he accepts the charge, Lovett's tally would be cut by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two match suspension.

Solomon was booked for charging West Coast's Ben Cousins but he can accept just a one match ban because of his previous good record.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct, medium impact, behind play and body contact - equating to 225 demerit points and a two-match suspension - but this would drop to just 126.56 points and only a one match ban through both an early plea and because of Solomon's clean record.

The panel also handed out fines for engaging in a melee to Carlton's Heath Scotland and Anthony Koutoufides and St Kilda's Stephen Milne, Stephen Powell and Leigh Montagna over an incident that occurred during the second quarter of Sunday's match at the MCG.

Meanwhile the panel took no action over a half-time altercation during Sunday's Essendon-West Coast clash at the Dome while also clearing Fremantle's Heath Black and Essendon's Mark Johnson over any wrongdoing involving clashes with the Kangaroos' Andrew Swallow and West Coast's Daniel Kerr respectively.

that's not good, and the Hawks were doing so well too, well likely end up missing out on the Finals again. but their are still pretty of rounds left, so one mustn't give up too much hope.

better give it up Kanga. Us Canadians are not cool enough to fully appreciate Aussie Rules Football. We are almost as bad as the Americans that way. Sigh

ah, you guys have a Aussie ball league, and I understand that you don't like the AFL/VFL as much as the leagues that you have teams in.

you Canadians are cool.

Fact of the matter is, Australians barley follow the NHL, much less (ice) hockey, and have no idea about the CFL, which is sad cuz if they knew about the CFL, they would like it better than the NFL, and the NFL has only a few fans there and is pretty much sunned by Australians, however, I think they would like the CFL better cuz of the rules and the players.

I should really update this though, and add the Canadian Australian Football Association as well.

AFL is awesome! I was able to attend a game in Sydney in 2001. Essendon hammered them. Kind of funny. Up till that game, the Swans were leading the AFL. After the loss I was at, it was all down hill. Shoot, hope the Canadian boy didn't bring bad karma....

I dream of one day sitting in the MCG for the Grand Final. That would be cool!
